I don't think that men think you SHOULD offer sexual favours (it's not free anyway so not a favour); rather SOME men (and women) are prepared to pay for more than a straight massage. They think that because you do massage you COULD offer sexual relief/Tantra etc. That's why the 'perverts' phone and ask and presumably if you say NO they go away (except your friend that got phoned twice).

When I was doing night duty nursing - any problems with tents in the bedding on male orthopaedics were solved with a quick spray of Right Guard deodorant under the bedclothes. Not sure why it had to be Right Guard - but it got Pavlovian in the end! (no - not the meringue!)

A few years ago I was contacted by a gent who asked if I'd be comfortable giving him a massage while he was naked. After explaining that he could be naked, but a modesty hand towel would be used for both his comfort and mine he started breathing heavy and talking in such a low pitch I could no longer understand him.

He liked the thought of getting a massage a little too much... that's what I call a pervert!

I personaly do not have a problem massaging nude and undrapped it is actualy a lot easier to massage especially when doing the buttocks. There is nothing worse then worrying if you are going to twang the clients back side with his or her underwear when trying to massage that area and makes me even more nervous than seeing a nakid but looking up at me Yes you do get the pervert who wants the happy ending and thinks if he asks just one more time that you will go oh alright then and the other one who wants to do his own hand relief but with you watching.... some strange folk! But there are the genuine ones who just like to be nakid and yes they do sometimes get a reaction but it is just a normal bodily function and as long as they do not expect anything at the end then I am perfectly happy to massage them. On the other side of this though is what other therapists think of what I do, when I say I will massage nakid and undrapped they look at ME like I am perverted and treat me like I should not be in the business so sometimes I feel I can't win. But in the end it is my clients that count and as long as they continue to enjoy my therapies and I continue to have a line I will not cross then that is all that matters.

Hi Kaspa. It's good to hear such an enlightened attitude. Keep doing what your doing and ignore the criticism from your less enlightened colleagues. It's not their fault. It's western societies fault. This has taught us that the naked human body is somehow shameful.

As far as erections are concerned, they are a normal reaction. We all get the thrill seekers. I'm talking about the genuine client looking for healing. I've had ladies leave a damp patch behind. There is no way I would consider them perverse. It's a reaction they had at that time and may never happen again. We are dealing with much more than soft tissue when we lay our hands on another human being and they will take from the experience whatever they need to. As long as the boundaries have been well established there can be no harm.

I am glad this thread is running, as it basically addresses my main worries.

Firstly, being asked to massage someone naked, secondly, being asked to do glutes massage.


My tutor told us about a new website currently being developed by ITEC, which lists "perverts" and worrying clients, you need either a itec or vtec registration number to view it (obviously to prove you're a professional therapist). I don't think it's in action yet, but the whole class were very relieved. I'm not sure if it's down to the boom in escort agencies/lap dancing classes or what ever, but there are definitely more pervs around.

My tutor said the site should be up and running next Summer!

When you say it lists 'perverts and worrying clients', im assuming you mean their details? If this is the case then I cannot see ITEC or VTCT doing this in a million years! Can you imagine someone rings 5 therapists asking for glutes massage, and the 5 therapists in question have had some shoddy training, and dont live in the real world, and they complain to itec or vtct and they put this client on their list of perverts.....and he finds out....neither organisation would be able to afford the libel/slander compensation that they would have to pay!

Unfortunately guys, yes there are people out there, of both sexes, who may want more than a regular massage, but thats doesnt mean that everyone who asks for naked massage, or glutes or abdomen or anything else like that, is a pervert.

I had one student who refused to work on a guys abdomen because her previous (body massage) tutor had told her to avoid completely as it caused erections!! What utter tosh!

I also think that gluteal massage should be made compulsory on every massage course!

I hope they've considered the Data Protection Act and the possibility of people taking libel action against them if someone has been 'labelled' a pervert without any evidence. Just someone being called a pervert or "worrying client" because they phone up asking if the massage can be done naked, would not constitute proof and could lead ITEC into some serious legal action, if that's what they are doing.

Couple that with the Freedom of Information Act and they could be liable to having to provide a list of such people to anyone who requests it.

There's more to storing people's information than just saying you're storing it 'safely'.

Sorry I don't think I explained myself fully,- I was in a bit of a rush earlier.

The 'pervert' but is just what some of us would call those particular clients, obviously ITEC wouldn't have a list called 'the pervert list' as such!

My tutor explained that you need your itec or vtct registration number to log onto the database, this is to actually prove you're a professional therapist and not some "learn massage in 1 day" type therapist! once you're logged on you can access the telephone numbers of any clients who have either phoned and asked for 'extras' (as long as it wasn't a withheld no) or and this is the most important of the two,- the address and telephone no of the person who had either 1.fully undressed or 2.asked for extras whilst on the couch. I'm sure some of you are already aware how horrible it is for mobile therapists working from peoples homes when something like this happens,-imo this will be a very good security measure, after all the therapists security is very important in his day and age.

A lady on my course did ask the tutor about client confidentiality, but apparently it's provided and funded by the Government in conjunction with the two main bodies within the UK- vtvt, and itec, and was set up to protect professional massage therapists but it's not going live until the Summer.

When I phoned Itec to get a bit more information they asked for either itec or vtct reg no, when I said I hadn't had my no through yet they wouldn't give me any more information about the site. So put it this way, no registration number no information, but I'm told by my tutor it's an online database.

I started my course in September, my tutor said vtct will send my registration number thorough the post, but I am yet to receive it, I hope it comes soon. It's also inconvenient as we are supposed to list our reg no at the top of our written assignments.


Re. Glutes massage. My tutor told us to NEVER massage the glutes or abdomen of a male as this will cause him to get erections, and also said we are professional therapists and anyone asking for naked massage should be reported as they have obviously mistaken you for one of those erotic massage with happy ending type ladies and it's not fait that we professional therapists are getting mistaken for the sex industry type ladies.

Yes, if that's the case then there's nothing they can do, but it's more the clients that actually fully undress or ask for extras that's the problem.

I agree with Richard, your tutor doesnt know what she is talking about, and its people like that who are instilling fear into trainee massage therapists!!

Yes there are unsavoury clients, but they exist in every section of society, from the people who go into shops and abuse the shop assistant because they cant have a refund, to the people who give their GP a smack because they dont like what they are being told.....its life unfortunately.

If you get calls from clients asking for unwanted services, put the phone down on them, if you think they are becoming nuisance callers, report them to the police, although I dont think asking for a naked massage warrants being called a pervert!

I wish some tutors would get their acts together and actually start teaching about this matter in a proper way, instead of scaremongering! It makes me wonder if they have actually done any massage before they went into teaching?!?!
