I would re-iterate that you shoudl DEFINETLY not buy a carry case that has wheels. They will get suck int he pavement and the minute they do they will rip out from the fabric that they are sewn into.

Also, Have you thought about the fact that you will be seriously eating into your profits if you take taxis to yoru clients?

E.g. £25 for treatment and around £10 in taxis?

Can you learn how to drive and buy an old banger?

I was wondering about the taxi cost eating intothe already slim outcall profit margin as well.

Even if thiscould be written off, whenever I've needed to get a receipt from a cabbie for business expense documentation (in my past corporate-slave life) here AND overseas, it was just aboutimpossible, even after muchwrangling anddelays the scribbledslips I could sometimes get never held up to scrutiny so I always had to eat the cost.

You're really brave in my book, Warlock! I'm much more comfortable knowing exactly when I'll be leaving my home, what route and how long I'll take to get to my client, and that my clean, smoke-stench-free car will be waiting no matter what time I finish. Outcallsconsume so much time as it is...having to wait to flag down another cab (especially in nasty weather) to take me to my next client hopefully on schedule istoo much uncertainty and stress for me!

I have had my first lecture at college and we have been recommended to purchase a massage couch for home study and practice.One aspect of thecriteria along with others is topurchase one that is more than 66 cm wide to ensure a confortable client, I havefound one that is 70cm wide does anyone have first hand knowledge if a couch can ever be too wide?

Any other tips for a couch ould be handy!

When I was training I found the massage couches at our college really narrow so I got a wider one. Its 28inches wide [71cms i think] and it makes a lot of difference. Mine is a Darley - it was a bit more money but definately worth it everyone says its really comfy.
I got mine from the Massage Table Store - they have a website and they are all qualified therapists and very helpful.

I'm going to be practising SM on colleaguesfrom my rugby club so I am looking for a couch suitable forthe bigger client over 6ft &100kg (15 stone)plus. It needs to be reasonably portable but not necessarily ultra light. Budget under £300, second hand an option.
The main requirement is something which feels sturdy & surportiveto the the client.
What do you suggest?

You might want to do a google search and find stockists of Earthgear portable couches. I use one and it is very sturdy. A new one should be less than£300!!!

Remember that the table will also be taking some of your own weight as you lean in to apply pressure, and/or sit on the the edge of table (do I hear gasps of horror [sm=nono.gif] ) to work.

Have a look at this product.I work at a rugby club, and use this table.Its more than up to the job.
It weighs in at 15 kg, takes way over 500lbs, is made by earth gear and best of all cost's just over £200!

I am looking to buy a new couch for Massage, Reflexology and Facial treatments and am quite interested in the Santana Portable Massage couch. I havent been able to find a supplier on the Internet who has a showroom where I can go and have a look at the couch before I buy so i was just wondering if anybody has one of these couches and what they think of it.
I am thinking of getting it from Body & Soul UK. Has anybody any experience of buying stuff from them?

I am relatively new to this forum so forgive me if this appears in the wrong place.

I have just recently completed the reiki evolution level 1 course and i am looking for a treatment couch since i do not have a large dining table which can be used as such nor would it be portable. I have no experience with makes and models or suppliers however i would like something basic and portable for treatment of friends and family that is fairly robust and not so taxing on the pocket
I have had a look on ebay for some portable couches but there are as many types as there are flowers so again i find myself standing at the entrance to a maze.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me recommended suppliers prices makes etc...

With regards to the coulch, I have an earthgear couch. I bought it over 4 years ago, but it has worked very hard for me and is still in good shape! It isn't too heavy as I use it when I go out to clients, but it is sturdy enough for the cleints to feel comfortable. It also came with a carry case.

Try putting "lightweight massage couch" in a google search. SOme possibilities will come up!

You could try a local hair and beauty wholesalers (look in yellow pages), or an MBS fayre, or look in the local paper to see if there are any second hand couches. Online - massage 2000 and google for it. Of course HP have a classified section too!
When you buy a couch here are some tips:
1. If you wouldn't stand on it, don't buy it;
2. Its height should be near the knuckle, not too high nor too low. (but some couches are adjustbale);
3. Look ahead as you may start doing other therapies - go for one with a face hole or similar arm rest feature and also one with a back rest.
4. If you are planning on being mobile, it needs to bea fold up portable model and make sure you can lift it without straining yourself. Will it go in the car, has it acoveretc?

Costs? Remember to haggle even at the wholsalers. Some do special deals.

Re. massage couch.

I bought one from Ebay at Christmas time. I paid £0.99 plus £25.00 postage from Germany.

It is absolutely brilliant. Larger than the normal sized beds but with loads of extra features (adjustable height, side wings, face hole etc).

Type in massage beds into Ebay and see what it comes up with.

The company that I got mine from was Fena designs in Germany.

Hi Rachael, Wooden vs Metal Couches, I believe it's just personal preference. However, from my experience when I was training, no matter if you use wood or metal, make sure it has cable ties to enhance stability n tension.

Hi Rachael,

The table you chose is quite a good table and comes from a good brand who only produce quality tables.

No offence to dazsnake but I would stay well away from some of the sites mentioned above. They are the nastiest cheapest imports from China. They will do for practice while training but will risk you losing clients if you are using them on a professional basis and will rust if you store them in a shed or garage.

Regarding metal vs wooden. Actual metal tables like the one in the website above I would stay away from, so you should choose between ALUMINIUM or WOODEN and it is entirely up to you. aluminium have the advantage of being lighter and sometimes stronger and the nuts and bolts can be tightend after a few years of use where its a bit harder to keep wooden tables in as new condition after maybe 2-3 years of regular use.
