The radiation in the ground there won't kill anyone instantly. It's more of a long term effect thingy. People exposed to it will probably get cancer during their lifetime if they don't get killed from something else first. Didn't the accident happen in 1985, or something like that? Lots of birth defects from the mothers who were exposed to it when they were kids. It's kinda like the "9/11 effect". People that were in New York City when it happened, and are lucky to be healthy today, will probably still get cancer from that event.
