what would you do?

I've been offered a room in a new beauty therapy place, however, after initial agreement with the salon manager, her mother has telephoned to say that I can not do my full range of treatments and she thinks it will conflict with those her daughter does and that existing clients i treat for massage can not be treated on the premises.

She has also said that the amount of money we had agreed would be up'd.

I don't know what to do now. Who am I dealing with the girl who's going to be running the place, or her mother?

How can I tell some of my clients they can come with me and not others who incidentily may spend money with her.

I'm getting bad vibes, any advice out there?

Have you spoken to the daughter about this yet?

There seem to be confusion about who is running the place at the moment and that is not a very healthy way to run a business in the first place?

Can you imagine what your working conditions are going to be like if you and the daughter decide on things, just to be phoned up the next day by the mum and told differently?

I think you need to talk to the daughter and then reassess the whole situation again…

I had a really similar situation, where the owners kept changing the goal posts. I had bad vibes too and walked away. Clarify everything and talk to the Boss, if that is the mother you may not get what you want and you will need to decide if it is the right environment for you to work in.

I would echo what TigerBee and others have said, clarify and follow your instincts. Discuss who you are reporting to and get all agreements in writing signed by both parties.

I find it interesting that you cannot treat current clients. Personally I would wish to discuss this further, if I was hiring a room in a Salon then I would have felt that I can offer all my treatments unless there is a specific reason why the salon would not wish to offer it. Also the fact that the mother has suddenly interferred and increased the rental / agreed rate would worry me.

Before starting make sure you are 100% happy with all arrangements and the environment.

Yes. How odd. They should welcome you bringing in business! I know I would! I wish we could find therapist who have existing clients.[&:]

Sort it out, listen to what they have to say and then decide.

The mother might be in charge, it might be more her business.

What you don't need is to work with therapists who have an ego. You need to work together for the good of the business and the clients. Withouth that you are stuffed.

There will be other places.

hi cmn get to know as much about them as possible. Any other therapists working there you could talk to?
Protect the clients you already have by continuing to see them elsewhere, otherwise the new salon may obtain their details and target them if things dont work out .[]
Dont be afraid to try these bisness opertunitys out but do it in a way that exposes you to the minimum risk!

Me too, and one where the management changed. At the end, I left and have no regrets. Start as you mean to go on, as they say, and you don't want them to carry on as they have started.

Thanks for all your replies. I had thought I'd sorted it out. I'd spoken to the girl who confirmed that it was her that was making the decisions. She agreed that I could do my type of massage and she would do hers (aromatherapy that I can't do) Yes I could take my clients etc etc. I put it all in writing and took it in and the sister joined in! Then the mum rang again telling me very bluntly that I had been told previously that I wouldn't be doing it and that's that. So I told them I wouldn't take the room.

Who the heck was running that one then, all three of them or what. So yes I'm best out of that one I think. I can't understand the thinking behind not letting me have my existing massage clients on the premises, who would have spent money on products and treatments that I couldn't do. But if that's how their business thinking is, let them get on with it.

I'm obviously disappointed, because it was a nice new salon, but I've got other things in the pipe line... don't keep all your eggs in one basket so to speak.

It has been a very strange experience. I said I would write formally to confirm that I wouldn't be taking the room but the mother said don't bother!

Looks like you made the right decision and yes tie up your loose ends....it just means there is something far better around the corner, and it may be a nice shiny new salon but an empty salon is not a good one...and at that rate can not envisage it getting full!

But if that is the way they are conducting their business, I can't see that it is going to last long and there is nothing 'nice' about any kind of business with a bad atmosphere...

For what it is worth, I think you have made a very wise decision.

Let it go. It isn't your problem and you are well out of it.

They won't be thinking about you and I suggest you don't think about them anymore and just look for somewhere else. You had a lucky escape, it would have been awful.
