Just got back from Riga. Prices are still rising. The city was empty of course because of Ligo. Weather was great for a couple of days. Voodoo and most other clubs were quiet, but Roxy is just the same as ever. Avoid the Azeri girl drinking champagne (her name is Hyacinth or some other flower name) - she is a drug addict. There's a lot of tension under the surface yougotmale.

I asked Latvian (and ethnic Russian) friends their attitude to foreigners earlier this year. They weren't particularly politically correct!

1) They believe that black people don't offer their society anything, but can only take.

2) Black men are earning a reputation for getting girls pregnant and then leaving. There have been a few instances of women being left to bring up half-caste babies on their own and with no support from the (absent) father. The children will not fit in in their society, and there is no real social security system in Latvia - the mothers will really suffer unless their parents can help them. As the streets are lined with the elderly begging because they can't live on their $60 a month pension, this may be impossible.

3) Black culture is seen as undesirable, especially by Russians, who see it as being largely urban, "gangsta" style, revolving around crime, drugs, firearms and a style of music they don't like. Russians rate culture highly, having great literature and art, classical music...and of course a history and culture stretching back centuries.

4) Black people are seen as lacking in intelligence, and spreading AIDS.

I know a couple of girls who have worked in England, and everyone I know knows of SOMEONE who is working or has worked abroad, so I was very interested to hear their views as they have had direct contact with black, asian and asiactic people. They held the above views even more strongly.

Maybe some of the visitors to Latvia haven't been such great ambassadors of their people.
