New rating system!!!

In keeping with the admonishments of the moderators "et al" I've come up with my own new rating system. In a former life I used to frequent the racetracks, actually training and driving(standardbreds/trotters-pacers). So, in keeping with this theme, let me first establish the standards.

WOODBINE/MOHAWK aka Woodbine Entertainment Group, aka The Jockey Club
****"The Big Leagues, the big show!!!

HFH and IT fit this catagory - nowhere else

all the others - "the B tracks"

Lisa - formerly of HFH * - no longer in the business(sob)
Lisa races in the "Fillies & Mares Open". Always game, never takes a bad step, can race on the front end or out of a hole, when she turns for home, blazing speed, always "finishes" in the top three, never misses a cheque.

Sarah - HFH & SRM, now back in the HFH stable
Consistent performer, excellent conformation, from what I hear, never really tries the first time you take her out for a spin, but once you've drove her a time or two, she gives a good honest effort in finishing. Races in the higher conditioned classes, not good enuff for the "Open", but pays her way, and then some.

Shauna - IT stable
A flashy filly, excellent conformation, extreme speed for a short piece, when she draws a good post she's always a threat to be in the top three. She's had a lot of vet work done. Shauna made a lot of money in the 2 & 3 year old stake races, and now she's ready to take on all "comers" in the "Open".

Natasha - HFH stable
Just drove her today. Way out of her class at HFH. Poor conformation, just doesn't stand right. Hits her knees in the turns.
Gets on a line. Puts in bad steps. No real speed. Belongs in a mid-lever claimer at Barrie.

Christina - IT stable
My personal favourite!!! Actually had the pleasure to sit behind her twice. Not as flashy as some, just puts in a good honest effort. Tuck the whip under your arm when you drive this one, boys, you won't need it. I regard this filly with some real affection. If I owned this filly, she would never see the claiming ranks, if it got she just couldn't "do" any more, well, I just bring her home to the farm, turn her out, and try and get some foals!!

***This should be vague enuff not to attract any LE attention, however the ORC(Ontario Racing Comission) may send me to the "Test barn" to see what I'm racing on.!!

haven't had the chance to put any of my money down for these ladies...but I have this feeling about emilia at IT...on new turf...just out from training...a champion in the making...don't know but I'm willing to bet the farm...er...house on it...

Bruce, it sounds like Christina may be ready for a "Free for All".

By the way, how does she respond to urging? Does she quicken the pace when you yell "come on, let's go! Faster, Faster!".

How about physical urging? Does she like it when you show her the whip? Maybe she steps it up when you just wave your stick at her?

What's her favorite hole? I bet if you draw the 1 hole she'll make you shoot to the front quickly.

How does she like the sloppy going? What about Lasix (I'm not even gonna ask about any history of bleeding).

So many questions before I can commit to playing her in any upcoming daily doubles.

Maybe we should consider changing the name of the board to the "Handi(job)cappers"(I can't resist bad puns. Could you tell?) We could post the odds on getting a good session....such as:

Shauna - 5 to 2: if you give her a trip, she'll finish well

Tarah - 5 to 1: moody filly, been known to make the odd "dirty"
break off the gate. Has been a top performer, raced poorly in
her last two.

Cameron - 1 to 1:even money. There will be no show wagering.

Paige - 1 to 5: never a long shot, no mattter who's down to
drive.

Jasmine - 3 to 1: for those of you who like the "dark horse".

Natasha - 99 to 1: long shot...say no more.

We all look for good value and a little excitment when we "plunk" our hard earned cash down at the windows. This hobby could be known as the "Fastest sport on three legs!!!"

Don't do it.

Once you start, you'll keep going back and spending lots of $$$. It's addictive; the anticipation of the start, going down the stretch, not to mention the euphoria of photo finishes. You'll be contemplating a "large bet on a sure thing" versus "small layout with high parlay". You'll find yourself skipping an hour here or there from work. You'll start hiding this from your S/Os. And then you'll need help to curb/stop this problem of yours.

...err, guess it's too late.

According to the "Commission" rules, a "driv(h)er" must keep both hands on/in the "handholds"(think about it) until the "head" of the stretch, or risk a fine, or suspension, or both.
My personal experience is that "fillies" won't take as much of the whip as a "stud or gelding" without switching their tails and sulking.
I find just laying the whip above the base of the "tail" and making kissing noises works best.
Fiberglass whips are cheaper, lighter to carry, and don't break as often, although nothing makes a louder crack than a rawhide whip against the saddle pad. Mind you, they will leave quite a mark, if that's what you're into!!
"Riding crops" are for sissy equestrians!!!
