Just got back from Cancun. Lot's of talk here that it is overly expensive and sucks. I had a great time though, here are my tips on basic logistics:

1) I highly recommend using priceline.com to bid on a hotel. I got a very nice resort hotel on the strip for $65 per night.
2) Take the shared van from the airport to your hotel instead of a private taxi. $14 vs $58.
3) Use the public bus whenever possible. 65 cents vs $10-$15 for a taxi. A bit of a pain in the ass to find one back from el centro at night though, so you may need to take a cab back from the city. (no problems on the island any time though).
4) Get off the Island into el Centro at least some of the time to mix with the locals. Restaurants are a lot cheaper there too. Tulum street and Yaxchilan street are good to walk.

Now for the fun stuff. I skipped Plaza 21 because of all of the talk of how expensive the strip clubs are. Here's what I did find:
1) By all means check out pleasure principal. If you are in the club area of the Island ( Daddy O's, Coca Bonga, etc.) you are only a few blocks away. You will never find it though, so pay a cab driver $10 to take you there. Once inside they will give you their "sales pitch". You go to a nice clean room with a bed, and one by one the girls come in to meet you. After a brief chat (helps if you have some Spanish) they give you a peck on the cheek and the next girl comes in. I saw about 10 girls, all very hot 7s-9s. After that the manager quotes you $250 incall, $350 to your hotel...no pressure whatsoever. Given the professionalism and cleanliness of the place combined with the quantity of hot girls to choose from, $250 is not out of line in my book. I did not return to book a girl because of option 3 below, so I can't comment on the quality of service. No long expensive cab ride out to the sticks, no cover charge or buying girls drinks...why wouldn't you check it out?

2) Someone before had posted about a Spa on the Island but I can't find the post now. It is near a golf course maybe a half mile south of the giant Mexican flag near the Isla Mujeres ferry. It on the lagoon side of the main road with a red sign that says "SPA" that is easy to spot. It is your basic rub n tug that goes from $30 for a massage up to $120 for FS (if you tell the "madam you want a HJ for $60 you can probably negotiate FS with the girl for less). The girl was o.k...a 5 or a 6 but very nice and eager to please. This would be your cheapest, easiest option.

3) Besides having a lively night life with lot's of places to eat and drink, Yaxchilan street has lot's of SW after 10:00 PM. This may not be your cup of tea, and you may not see anything you like, but it is free to look. Beware there are tranny's, and all levels of quality. If you go into it with the attitude that I will just look, you have nothing to lose. I found a hot little 24 year old, 5'0", 110 lbs, the best natural 34 C tits I have seen who defied every SW stereotype. Cute, friendly, not on drugs, total GFE, for $100/hour no rush. Got her phone number and there was no reason to go back to pleasure principle. If you go this route there is a hotel 5 minutes away in Market 23 (the cab drivers know it) that is $25 short stay. It is very clean and safe. Speaking some Spanish is required for this option.

Update Jan: 4: When I was in Mexico I didn't take into account the strengthend US dollar...I assumed 10 pesos = $1...that is not the case.

So the $100/hr girl was really $72/hr and the massage started around $21 up to $86 for full service.

PP quotes their prices in US dollars...not sure if you can get away with paying 2,500 pesos ($180).

Here's hoping Obama supports a strong US dollar!
