Massage Couches

My old couch has finally given up!

I really need to get a new one asap. I've been looking at Darley & Beautelle couches mainly, and I can't decide!

Is there much to choose from between the two companies quality wise?

I definitely need one that is pretty light, and has an adjustable back rest. A face cradle would be good, as well as a pretty decent thickness.

Darley do a lovely exceptionally light couch that I have my eyes on for next time. Although both Darley and Beautelle are meant to be excellent quality.

I can recommend Darley .. I had a couch "made to measure" when I first qualified and it has served me well ... and continues to do so. I have to say that I opted for a deluxe portable model and it is a little heavy to carry about .. but not impossible ... these days I choose to have it set up in my treatment room ... I am too long in the tooth to carry a table from a to b only to be greeted by a client who thinks that it would be best to work upstairs ..... north face of the Eiger etc.. too much like hard work!

On a customer service point .. when my couch was delivered it was damaged (a slight rip in the cover) in transit .. I phoned them and they arranged to collect the couch the next day, they repaired it & returned it to me within a week... so I would not hesitate to order from them again.

Good on you for deciding to do the course. I'm sure you'll find it rewarding.

We were advised to buy our couches just before we started our case studies. By then you'll know whether you enjoy doing the course and won't have shelled out loads of dosh if you don't! There are loads of threads on here about couches and also your tutor should be able to point you in the right direction as well. Hope that helps.

I got mine from E-bay. You have to keep on your toes with it and stick to the price you want to pay but it is good fun. Also if you search under massage tables on the web you can pretty much take your pick.

I've just bought a couch from Costco. I did look at couches in a local hair & beauty supplier as well as checking out supliers on the net, but Costco offered the best deal for me. It's made by Master Home, 29" wide, 3" thick padded foam, has an adjustable face cradle, comes with a carrying case and is £176 inc VAT. Bouncy Tigger is right - there are plenty of threads on here about couches, which are really useful, they certainly helped me and gave me the confidence to check out what's available and make the right choice for what I needed.

Good luck with your course, you'll be starting about the sametime as I do, my A&P course starts at the end of May, nerve wrecking, but exciting at the sametime

I bought my couch from Marshcouch. Very helpful people who make the couches on the premises to your spec. I bought a height adjustable couch that was 26" wide (just right for clients to lay both arms either side). It was £428 but I also do beauty treatments so I can make the money back easy. Some of the people in my class have bought a bed from Physio for £240 and seem to be happy with that as this is the 1st course they have embarked on. Although they have said that if they get into massage more seriously after the course they would buy a better couch! Hope that helps.

I have the Costco couch same as Jo. They had an offer on earlier this month which let you get one for £141, but that was a one week only offer for members. Not sure if they will do it again.

Sometimes if you ask where you train they will know ex-students who are selling old couches or they may know of other companies who might use them.

The Costco one is made by master and i am pleased with it, nice and sturdy, adjustabe, face cradle and the foam is thick and comfy and it can bear a lot of weight so it's ok for the remedial / sports work. It's heavy as hell, that is my main hang up about it. It's wider than normal, about 29" but Beautelle do covers which will fit it. I think it's £27 for three.

was about £170 and is a good size, fully height adjustable, a bit big and heavy to be easily portable but i can just about manage and im only petite!

I really want to purchase a light weight massage couch but can't afford the Starlight or New concept couches which cost £700 +. I've been looking on some American websites and the prices of couches are so much cheaper. I saw an Earthlite Peagasus that weighs 22lbs and costs $459. I am due to go on holiday to America in the next few months and am thinking of buying a couch and bringing it back with me. Have any of you bought a couch and brought it back with you from America? Did you have to problems bringing back? or has anyone ordered a couch on line from America?

Your help would be appreciated.

I have been looking at doing something similar myself, but for an EarthLite Avilla II chair. Over here from IPM it is £460, from the states it is £212 at the current exchange rate. Shipping to get it over here is about another £65 - £120. If you are importing any goods you need to talk to Customs & Excise to find out about Import Duty and VAT - much easier then it sounds.

To find out about Import Duty you need to get an item code, a long number that identifies what it is you want to import. You get this from one department, then talk to another department to find out the Import rate and if VAT is added and at what rate. For a massage chage duty is zero rated, VAT 17.5% so the total price to have a chair shipped over is approximately £325 - £400, not much of a saving.

Going over and buying a table / chair to bring back clearly saves your shipping costs, but you will still be liable for VAT, you can't really sneak it through the green channel. What you will have to do is talk to your Airline to discuss the size and weight of the box, will there be any excess weight charges or any problems / charges with the size of it.
