This past Monday, I had occasion to discuss the rejection of an insurance claim for massage with the supervisor of claims examiners at one Canada's largest insurance companies. I have to be careful of what I say here, because the discussion was part of official business and during the discussion the examiner used as an example a Chinese MP that is currently subject to a NRP.
The essential point of the exercise is that insurance coverage is only for "therapeutic massage." That does not include the so-called Thai Massage or any other sensual or erotic massages.
What I can share with you is the process used by the examiner for rejecting a claim. She even went further, and ran me through the process in real time while we were both on our computers. The lesson took place at about 4:30 PM on Feb.16th, and went like this:
1. We opened our computer to CL at
http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/ers/.
2. She chose as her example the advertiser that just happened to be first on the list at that time. It turned out to be that Chinese MP that is subject to a NRP.
3. Conveniently, the listing had the MP's address right there in the listing, so there was no need to open the ad itself.
4.The address was then inserted in the "to search" space and we clicked on "Search."
5. This revealed a list of 39 ads that had been placed by the MP in the last couple of months, with multiple ads being placed each day, 4 ads having been placed on the 16th.
6. The listings were so explicit that there was no need to actually open the ads to know that all sorts of other "non-therapeutic", erotic and sensuous services were what was primarily being offered here.
7. Here are a few examples of the listings we saw:
- "Super sexy"
- "Sexxxxy Young and Wild"
- "Options!!! Options!!! And More!!!"
- "Thai Massage and More With Sweet Girls"
- "Sensual Massage"
- "Amazing Service by Busty Girls"
8.The examiner had made her point, but just for the hell of it, she wanted to open the "Sexxxy Young and Wild" ad.
9. The beautiful, completely nude young girl on display, didn't in any way demonstrate how her attributes might be used for a "therapeutic massage."
10. Q.E.D.
Before an insurance claim is paid these days, this is the process insurance companies are starting to go through to justify their rejections. The examiner made it clear that any claim from an MP using those type of ads shown above would automatically be rejected.
Not only that, if the massage association that issued the receipt did not take disciplinary measures against the unacceptable MP, it might find that all receipts issued by all its other other members of the association might also be in jeopardy of being rejected.
Her last comment was that she was advocating to her superiors that all claims for massage would only be accepted for reimbursement if they were accompanied by a doctor`s prescription for therapeutic massage.
So, what`s the moral of the story here? If you`re crazy enough to mix your outside pleasures with the privacy of insurance, the time for continuing to do so may be running out.
