Why is it not simple closing and shutting down the Brothels in India?
There are patterns and life style similarity in people who visit these brothels in many parts of the country be it North, East, west or South.
There are several reasons for it. First to be honest major parts of India remain patriarchal and the dowry system results in killing or abandoning baby girls.IT STILL EXIST GUYS....hmmmm
Simply baby girls are regarded more as a burden and add to that the tentacles of povertyโฆ
So (many many )men from Hindi heartland and other places spend most of their time away from their native places and lives in cities and towns with no families and spends their time in sharing arrangement with others in small rooms. Wife and kids remain in villages where they go to visit twice or thrice a year( A true and sad fact).
Fast forward a few years after earning some decent money ,even if they bring back their families ,they hardly meet their needs meetโฆand live a tough life..
now we have truck drivers ,the life line of Indiaโs economy-and to be honest brothels are the only place they can have sex for most of the year and if you go on to visit famous brothels-truck divers and people in similar occupation form a majority of the customersโฆPEOPLE who visit these places are mainly outcasts and so are the prostitutes and now as there is a long demand for these kind of businesses, enter the politicians and Police. These people gets good money ,lots of pimps work under the blessing of political big shots and the mainstream society turns a blind eye..EASY MONEY!!and in a bitter way..in a country like India where the reach of the law is not that long, Brothels are here to stay and they resemble darker side of our society where so many in society live in fringesโฆBrothels are a symptoms of a problem very much ingrained in our society.
STD was common amongst the prostitutes working in Brothel. The common STD that they get infected with is
syphilis.
One of the main feature of this STD is red dots on palms and body. To hide this prostitutes started using red light as a way to mask such marks. It was effective and people didn't noticed such marks in the red light. So more and more brothels adopted this new innovative idea. Soon it became famous as a place where the light red lights.
The most famouse RED LIGHT AREA in India.
1.
Sonagachi, Kolkata
With the regrettable title of Asiaโs largest red light area, Sonagachi is a world in itself. Itโs inhabited by more than 11,000 sex workers. Watch the Oscar winning documentary, Born into Brothels , to know about the lives of the children born to prostitutes here. Pretty hard hitting stuff.
2.
Kamathipura, Mumbai
Indiaโs second largest red light district houses a staggering number of sex workers, most of whom live in squalor. The area also has a small beedi roling industry that is run by women. In the โ80s, gangsters like Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim frequently visited Kamathipuram.
3.
Budhwar Peth, Pune
Apparently the third largest red in India with around 5000 commercial sex workers. The area is also a hub of electronic goods and books.
4.
Meergunj, Allahabad
This red light district has a notorious reputation for illegal trafficking and forced prostitution. Itโs also pretty dangerous for visitors, which is kind of obvious considering the place sounds shady as hell.
5.
G.B. Road, Delhi
Another large red light area, this place is known for the hundreds of brothels along the streets. There are markets for machinery and vehicle parts on the ground floors and kothas or brothels above them. Strange.
6.
Chaturbhujsthan, Muzaffarpur
This old temple area has existed side by side with brothels since ancient times. Seems strange, but when you think about the high social space concubines occupied in the old days, it all starts to make sense.
7.
Itwari, Nagpur
The area in Itwari known as Ganga Jamuna is a hotspot of sex workers, along with other criminal activity.
8.
Shivdaspur, Varanasi
This red light village is another leftover of the ancient times that lost itโs sheen a while back. It sits on the edge of Varanasi city and is known for the cheap brothels being run from homes in the village.
