They start walking to find the other parachutes, and then the Japanese samurai guy appears behind them unseen to the group. He's about to start walking to follow them but his shoes make too much sound in the mud, so he takes them off so that he can walk barefoot quietly.
My question is, why does he go to all that trouble? Why didn't he just say introduce himself? I mean, it's not like he didn't speak English (he does speak English later in the movie). I'm sure he realized that the four people all just met each other, so I think it would've been easy for him had he just spoken up and they would've accepted him into the group.
