Yes - it is rational to be afraid of the TJ cops - they are corrupt big time.

Scenario that happened to me several times.

I like to get a cheap quickie from the girls that stand on the street behind Hong Kong club before the main event at Adelitas - sort of takes the edge off - This street is a wide open street with a whole bunch of chicas standing on it. The cost is usually about $20.

On several occasions I went wandering on the street behind that. What happens is a scammer/jerk/asshole will try to start walking with you and attempt to buddy you up to sell you underage girls, etc.

Then the police see this and stop you. You get forced into the police car with the other asshole and then the infamous "Tijuana Taxi" ride starts.

Cops won't let you out until you bribe him with all the money you have. Of course, asshole must be in on it because they they all state they have drugs on them and can't go to jail. Asshole tells me I'm going to jail for drugs too if he gets caught. (I never asked for drugs and would have run away if he told me).

After the cops extort all the money you have on you they let you go across the border. So leave all ATM, credit cards and extra cash in car on other side of border. The police car ride could be 10 minute ride - could be 2 hour ride - both have happened to me.

Also never go to ATM in TJ - always have your money before you. Cops wait outside ATMs near red-light district to scam.

Yup....19 million citizens. You'd think with that many targets of opportunity the thugs would be able to kill more than 44 folks per month. Maybe MS-13 could give them some pointers so they could improve their stats.

I don't know what the whole fuzz about TJ being scary is. Most of us in the states probably pass through far more dangerous neighborhoods for some reason or another. BTW the only violence I've experienced in TJ was when some drunk guys were fighting in the alley right by the sg's. I gotta say it was quite entertaining.

Good Point. There were 44 murders per month in NYC in 2010. We should probably knock that place off our list too. Looks like Arizona is off to a commanding lead with one man murdering 6 and wounding 19 all in one morning. Seems to me that Tj in comparison...is like a kid's playground or at the least, a safe place to monger!

I agree with your assesment. I compare going to TJ like getting on a plane. I expect to come back just fine. I expect nothing to go bad. There is some danger in both but is miniscule. But like you said if something happens I'm fucked.

I agree we don't need to go. Well I live here. In 10 years I have not seen anyone shot...not heard anyone shot, and do not live in fear.

I can see if people read the US papers they may be fearful. The shit is not random and nowhere near where we go.

You are not going to stop cartel violence against each other by boycotting Tijuana. I heard 6 people were killed in Tuscon over the weekend....I'm going to knock that city off of my list.....and Columbine HS in Colorado as well.

Since factors like ;are you going alone,,,and other matters of timing come into play for your safety...everyones situation is different If you speak Spanish ect) I have overlooked the violence in the past. Sure it probably wont affect you-but what if you are put in jail ( for no good reason-) and there are killers in jail with you? OR...some crap starts like a protest or other disruptions at the border entry point and you are stuck in TJ- possibly without fund$ ?
I agree that you will "Usually" be ok,,,but I think it may be time to make a statement to the ALL the folks in TJ and other border cities that we just might spend our Gringo Tourist Dollar$ somewhere else,,,untill it is better. We dont have to go to TJ, we can go to Reno, Nevada and not be in fear!
If you want to spead the word in Tijuanna we will vote with our feet and $$$ if the situation does not get better ???

TJ isn't as safe as it was (I'm guessing it was never really safe...ever). The odds are that nothing bad is going to happen to you, but if it does you are fucked!

You shouldn't be afraid. This whole violence stuff in TJ is overblown. I do admit that when you read this stuff it does affect you a bit but you have to realize that most of it is cartel on cartel violence. I don't know where you live in the states but wherever it is TJ is probably closer than Thailand. And IMO anyone can blend in in TJ or Mexico. That is also overblown. I mean Latinos are of every race.

If you don't act like an ugly american tourist, you're quite safe in la zona norte.

Don't do drugs, don't walk around aimlessly drunk, don't curse out in public, don't wear flashy jewlery, anyone can be a victim anywhere, even in Simi Valley or Irvine ... wrong place and wrong time ....

Hopefully, we won't ever make it onto the TJ news.
