Well I've gone and done it - made an appt to see another acupuncturist - Tuesday - so will see how it goes. She sounds like she knows what she's talking about too.

The whole problem simply doesn't exist in Su-jok acupuncture,
where the needles are inserted as a rule less than 2mm deep,
everything on the palm/fingers.
More elegant version, using plant thorns specially prepared for,
there's no need to prick the skin at all, just inserting in a piece
of tape and taping onto the point (the thorn works as energy antenna).

Good luck on trying out your new practitioner Janet.

As has been said - rapport is very important - and most practitioners are happy to discuss your needs and alay any worries you may have.

As long as your new practitioner is BAcC registered, you have at least their Codes of Practise to be reassured by, and know they are qualified, as opposed to charlatans.

Constipation should be fairly easy to sort out - but there may be underlying issues which need sorting first - so it may not be instant.

As for the water issue - you should aim to drink 2 litres of water per day. Too much can be as bad for you as too little though, so be aware of that.

And the constipation has been going on for a while - however I am a bit nervous about it - more will I be OK for work the following day or will I be tired or have some other aggravation - I've told her I'm very sensitive over the phone and she said first treatment will be gentle to see how I cope.

Also if you have acupuncture - should you stop other things you take like I'm currently seeing a homeopath and sometimes take magnesium with B6 and a probiotic. Should I just stop everything else and try acupuncture and see how I go. Not sure what to do with this or do I mention the other treatments to the acupuncturist and let her decide.

Know the last time the woman said homeopathy could be combined with acupuncture but how do you know what is working best for you and what is not? So confusing?

Any advice?

Hi Janet,

Your acupucturist will probably ask during your consultation anyway, i would not have thought their would be a problem, but just make it known to her. A colleague of mine successfully treats conditions like yours, with very good results, i am sure you will get good results too.

Yes I will tell her as I am a firm believer in homeopathy too and don't really want to give that up or stop seeing my homeopath.

I do hope they can help as not only the constipation is a problem but this bloat which is half and half between digestion and peri meno - I'm sure it's a bit of both!

As has been said Janet - your practitioner should ask you during consultation about other therapies and medications you are currently taking. It is then up to them to make their call - however, as far as I am aware, the meds should be fine.

The bloating should be something which is fairly straight forward - however, I can not make a judgement in all fairness, as I do not know your entire history. However, on a generalised note, bloating is fairly straight forward in most (not all) people to help.

One piece of advice - write down all the things you are suffering with at the mo, and take that with you, as sometimes people tend to forget things during consultation, and it is not until the next treatment or a couple later when they tell you something which is important or makes a difference to their diagnosis.

Thanks for that - I did give her a fairly comprehensive list when I spoke last week but I will write them down just in case I forget.

Last time I had acupuncture I had to ask to stop with feeling really nauseous to the point I thought I was going to be sick - this lady said it sounded like needle shock. So if I go a full treatment - what are the worst aggravations I could suffer and how long would they last - I'm speaking "loosely" as I know we are all different. Just I am very sensitive and sometimes when I've had therapies before I've been quite "off" for a few days.

Like QXCI treatment - was ill for weeks after having that!

Update

Had first appt today and very impressed - was in a full two hours just taking history - (other lady only spent 10 mins).

However as I wasn't feeling well today we decided not to do a treatment - the things I was comlaining of could have been helped by acupuncture but when she did the pulse test - one pulse was showing that I could be coming down with something - which may be the reason why I was feeling unwell.

So made an appt for next week but all in all - very impressed with her.

No, not at all - but as I said, if they ARE BAcC registered then you are covered by their Codes of Practise. That at least gives you some peace of mind. The BAcC is one of the major regulating body for Acupuncture in the UK - the British Academy of Western Acupuncture is another (although not one which is as commonly found). The other two relate to Medical Acupuncture and Physiotherapists - who are already bound by their own Codes of Practise. These 4 are the bodies working towards statutory regulation with the governmental departments. (And the sooner it IS regulated, the better IMO).

There ARE charlatans out there, working with no training at all - that is a fact - and that is a scary thought for anyone looking for a practitioner. The same as with any CAM therapy - everyone is advised to check the practitioners details.

Perhaps I should have worded it better to include the phrase used on TV ads - that "other regulating bodies are available".
I see where you are coming from - and my phraseology was not the best it could have been - so my apologies for that - it was not my intention to imply what you have perceived from my previous post. In fact - I will resist the urge to post in future unless it is something I can do so without causing offence. Probably better.

Yes, it is up to the individual to check out a practitioners qualifications, but it is not difficult for people to produce bogus certificates and insurance details is it?

So - to re-phrase my previous statement - for the purposes of harmony -

The other essential thing to check is that a practitioner is licenced by their Local Authority - as this is required by law, and the Local Authority will have seen copies of qualifications & insurance details along with checking the premises are clean and of standard. (I do however realise that within London the regulations are different, so people would need to check with the appropriate regulatory bodies)."

Well here's my update - had first acupuncture treatment today and up to now I'm OK. The practioner did a gentle first treatment to see how I cope as my first treatment a few weeks back wasn't enjoyable - suffered needle shock so she didn't put as many needles in, used very fine ones and left them in for 15 mins, to see how I go. If I do OK she will step the treatments up gradually.

Couldn't go last week as I had a bit of a bug.
