I've lived in Japan for about 5 years, two different times. Once in the 90's and also in 2000's, and I'm about to move back again. This is what I have to say.


1) Ignore the posters who are not currently living in Japan. Japanese culture shifts pretty quickly. The Japan I lived in in the 90's was not the Japan of the 2000's. There are far more foreigners living in Tokyo now, and many of them are from non-1st world countries. The result is Japan is becoming more xenophobic again.

2) Your race. Just like any other place, people have preferences. Some girls like tall guys, some girls like short guys, some girls like black guys. Contrary to many people's beliefs, Japan is not a place where people are just looking for sex.

3) Ease of picking up girls. It's all about you. Can you read the girl in the massageplanete? Can you tell she's interested? Frankly, after I lived in Japan the first time, what I got was a confidence boost that carried over to the states, and I got more play in the US than I ever did in Japan. You can't go to a country and simply think the women there are somehow fundementally different than in your own. That just makes you stupid. If you can be smooth or funny in English, have funny body language, that might work. As in any environment, knowing what kind of girl you attract, you want to attract and HOW to do it, via body language, etc is the real key. If you are fat, overweight, greasy hair and stained t-shirt, weazing when you walk... Then you are not going to get any digits at the massageplanetes. If you are well put together, fluent in Japanese, and walk into Doutour and stare at the girl next to you... you won't get any numbers. If you are dressed okay/appropriate, walk up to a girl at 109, ask in for a light, and ask a girl if she speaks english, then chat with her in fluent Japanese when she doesn't, you might get some. I have.


For the record, Ozgaijin's advice about dressing "nice" is way off the mark. It's all about what's appropriate. Are you going to Womb? Don't wear a suit. Are you going to Shibuya in General? Don't wear a suit, look trendy, wear a band t-shirt, casual, cool. If you are going to Heartland, you are a douchebag. Wear a suit. If you are going to Motown, the pinay girl you are talking to is a prostitute, and/or a man, and you are too drunk to notice. (Just kidding, Motown can be fun). If you go to ni-chome, no one told you its the gay section. If you know, and you still go, you know something that most foreigners don't.

Seriously though. It's not about "JAPAN". It's about you.

The only exception is this: I personally advise against getting married to someone you meet in Japan. I know too many friends who have gone for a ride on the green card divorce train. (Actually, this is not exclusive advice to Japan either... See how that works?)

I think there's something true about what gomibako wrote.
I am living in Japan now for about 16 years, many of them married to a Japanese honey.
IMHO, the key here is definitely the location.
Even I (introverted, Karaoke-, small talk-, loud music-hating, but classical music loving guy) got laid here, but that was in cities such as Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo where the society in this regard definitely works different than on the rice paddies up there in Northern Japan countryside.
If gomibako does not live somewhere close to Sapporo, I would fully support his views.
Now, I do not know Sapporo and the night life there, but it certainly helps to live in one of the metropolises.

The bottom line, I don't think it's very difficult to get laid in Japan, especially if you can speak Japanese.

I remember staying on Atsugi Air Base in Yokohama some years ago for a few days. Atsugi is a joint US and Japanese base (or at least it was) and is where the first US delegation flew in after the war.

Anyway, there were A LOT of Japanese civilian women in their 20s working there any my friend who was an officer in the US Navy told me that they were very much available and he and others were shagging them left and right.

Well, I _do_ currently live in Japan and I have to say that I do not have a single foreign male friend (English teachers included) in Japan who is not 1) in a relationship (if not more than one), 2) not in a relationship, but fucking at least two girls, or 3) gay.

gomikabo - I hate to say it, but as you may know, Japanese people are often deeply racist, particularly against black people. The NFL stopped playing exhibitions there in large part because the black players complained of racism in restaurants and clubs (being refused entry or not being served).

The Japanese also have some strange ideas. My GF there viewed WW II as the war in which the USA for no good reason dropped atomic bombs on Japan, I heard this a lot. When I pointed out events like the Rape of Nanking and the horrible treatment of civilian populations and POWs, etc., she had never heard of these events and dismissed them. I had my mother send me a Time-Life book of WW II to show her photos of Japanese atrocities which she had never seen, the most famous one being a Japanese officer with a samurai sword about to behead an Australian pilot who was blindfolded, she said, "Many man to bad things during war, not only Japanese man."

She told me Koreans caused most of the crime in Japan agreed with Japanese Only policies in restaurants because "western people can go to western restaurant and don't understand Japanese way." Yet she also despised Japanese men, said they were shit and treated women like crap and desperately wanted to live in the USA because "man is more kind to women there and woman is more equal to man" etc. Yet when I told her that some older Americans don't like Japanese people (WW II generation - this was the 1980s) she expressed shock and disbelief.

I don't know where she got a lof of her ideas but she believed in them absolutely. A wonderful girl, but her attitudes I found typical of the Japanese.

Getting back to the main subject, I think the key to "getting laid in Japan" is to live there and involve yourself in something and get to know lots of women and then it is quite easy. I don't think it is easy if you just show up in Tokyo and try to pick up women.
