I wouldn’t make the case that there were no positives, but on balance the cumulative combination of all the negatives massively outweighed the positives in my opinion, and Trump was manifestly unfit for the presidency. Given that he had zero experience in public service prior to holding office, that should have been the first clue...

I won’t go through all your points but even some of these positives are dubious when measured on the whole. Yes peace agreements are a good thing, but arguably resolving their stalemate was already in the interest of the principals involved. The Saudis knew exactly how to play Trump, and his open embrace of their interests even as Khashoggi was murdered was disgraceful and suspicious. Likewise Trump abandoned all pretence of the US as a neutral arbiter in the Middle East by relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem and otherwise going all in on Israeli political priorities. The best way to contain Iran is debatable, and Trump’s defence secretary General Mattis resigning in protest seemed a completely appropriate response to Trump’s ignorance of international complexities and his ham handed stab in the back to American allies in Syria.

Vaccine development was in many ways an international effort, and whatever degree Trump was directly responsible is severely overshadowed by his complete negligence, disinterest and ineptitude in dealing with the pandemic as a whole. Where to even begin? Of all the various ways the pandemic was badly mishandled, the messaging on masks as being unmasculine and a form of government tyranny was particularly harmful, and in keeping with Trump’s ability to turn even basic matters of governance and human survival into divisive politics. The right went nuts when four Americans died in Benghazi. The official count of dead Americans from this pandemic passed 400K yesterday.

Time will tell, but I believe that when the dust is settled history will view Trump as not only the worst American president of all time, but one of the all time worst in history, together with Nero, Caligula etc.

I disagree with you about the tally of the negatives vs positives where Trump is concerned. As usual, I feel before I say anything that could be construed as positive about the man I have to preface those statements with an assurance that I completely agree he is personally unsuitable to hold public office and a horrible communicator. He is not unskilled at appealing to a certain kind of audience, and he was often a funny fuck, but he has ZERO self discipline or judgment when it comes to addressing a wider world.

Most of what I see as the negatives about Trump boiled down to his incompetent communication efforts and a media that took advantage of that in their relentless campaign to demonize him. In doing so, the media completely sold itself out and betrayed the most basic responsibilities of journalism. Trump was more sinned against than sinning.

As for his actual policies, I've never catalogued them, but I suspect I agree with more of his than I do of the Democrats....and that goes double for their respective visions of the country. The side represented by Trump sees America as an imperfect union that has over time come closer to becoming the state envisioned by the principles of the Declaration of Independence, specifically those 35 words. The other side contains a large and increasingly influential faction, "the progressives", who see America as a state rooted in slavery, maintaining racial injustice through systemic racism--the central theme of the 1619 project. Pretty stark difference in visions.

If you parse all his public commentary it doesn't seem Biden himself was particularly keen on impeachment. He wants to move forward. The impeachment complicates his hopes for a quick start on tackling the huge mess he's been left to deal with.

Hard for unification to happen when a huge portion of the GOP denies the legitimacy of a democratic election. Hopefully 75 million don't support ransacking their own Capitol, but I guess we'll see. For some it's a big deal, but I guess you think they're overreacting, right?

They're also deleting 10's of thousands of dislikes from the videos... It's not about Trump anymore for me. (which it never was.)
Every news outlet is completely bias in one direction instead of being "subjective" about the situation.
They almost never report anything raw anymore either, even Canadian media has been massively taken over in this respect and usually have dislike ratios of 10-1.

I know one thing, I usually throw my vote away, but this time I'll be voting against Liberal, I've had enough of Justin Trudeau he's already been caught in so many self benefiting lies, and rolls over on every major issue, he rolls over every single time, or skirts around it until people forget after hearing the same thing for the 100th time on the news.
All I can really do is not vote Liberal, and even then it still won't do anything since we're allied with people that want to control, and create the very context that happens in reality rather then letting reality play out in a more natural fashion of choice.
That's the worse thing of it for me- there use to be an extent of choice in things that you could have that's just lessened, and lessened as time has passed here.

Some post-inauguration thoughts:

At the time I started this thread I thought there would have been some chaos on inauguration day - I am happy I was wrong. And a coup is extremely unlikely in the next few weeks. While three quarters of people who voted for Trump say they still think the election was stolen, they are not willing to have a revolution over it. At the riot there was contingent of serious actors who did want an insurrection, showed this by their actions, and the gambled that a significant number of Americans would join them in their cause. They have not. Most Trump supporters want to scream and shout but they have no appetite for violence, and they are horrified that they could be arrested and charged or gunned down by the National Guard. Some of them even deny that their side is responsible for the riot and blame the nasty stuff on Antifa infiltrators despite all evidence to the contrary. The serious element while they are dangerous it turns out they are not capable of big things at this time. Some of them were stupid enough to live-stream themselves during the riot, most made no effort to disguise themselves and are now being arrested. Some of those arrested were probably thinking that Trump would have their backs and would give them pardons. He did not. The net effect has been that the far right have demonstrated that they are a real threat and will now be taken more seriously. And the US is being confronted with the realization that White Supremists have infiltrated law enforcement and military. America is now in for a house cleaning. Active memberships in far right movements will decline sharply, and those that remain will go underground for a while but will become more resolute.

Being cut off from posting on social media seems to have neutered Trump (for now). This shows how powerful social media is now, but also how lazy Trump is.

So, good news for now. But the US needs to address serious economic issues at the ground level to avert the next insurrection. I think that overcoming the pandemic and a huge infrastructure program could do this. And I think the US will do these things. Both Churchill and Thatcher made the observation that America always does the right thing after doing all the wrong things first.
