The problem of explaining this is the overly simplistic narrative of the media and government. This narrative has only one goal: to get people to get vaccinated. It's therefore not to be trusted. One must look to other opinions not favored by the media to get a better understanding of the risks versus the benefits. If the vaccines were truly effective, the pandemic should be over by now, instead of the exact opposite.

So listen to this. On NYE I went to a friends place for dinner and afters. There were a total of 9 of us - 6 adults and 3 kids. I was the only unvaccinated adult there. One of the kids had one shot, the other 2 were unvaccinated.
Currently 4 of the 5 vaccinated adults have Covid19. Luckily none of them too serious but a couple have really been knocked on their asses. Pounding headaches, fevered and loss of taste/smell.
So what gives? The science they've been touting is that I should have been the most at risk and suffered the worst fate. Also out of all the adults I am likely in the worst shape physically carrying a few extra lbs in the midsection. Yet I have zero symptoms.

Yes I see that. However, I suspect that the vaccinated have actually outnumbered the unvaccinated for months. They've just been suppressing the data. You will also notice a substantial portion of those in ICU don't have any vaccination status. Right now its 107 of the 385.

Yes, we have found broad agreement on a few topics. On this topic, there may be some misunderstanding and some disagreement.

I asked “why are we moving the goal posts?”, not you. I was talking about the overall narrative.

While I wouldn’t allow my parents to be unvaccinated, I don’t believe everyone needs to be. I’m comparing percentages of hospitalizations and ICUs because those are the numbers that are being used to impose mandates and lockdowns on us. Until we’re using different numbers, I’ll continue to look at them.


As for the seatbelt analogy, the seatbelt and vaccine, by definition, have different functions. A seatbelt’s purpose is to minimize injury/death. A “vaccine’s purpose is to produce immunity to a specific disease”, not minimize symptoms/hospitalization/death. That’s what medicine does. The current Covid vaccines have failed, but they do kinda jive with the CDCs new definition “to produce protection to a specific disease”.

If you've had covid and have immunity, you personally stand a good chance of not needing the vaccine. But it's still a good idea to get it. Why? Because not everyone's immune response is the same. Someone with a mild infection may have had a weak immune response. Since it is not practical to assess everyone's level of antibodies in order to determine who has a strong immune response, it is easier to just vax everyone. It's an extra--and more importantly uniform and predictable--layer of protection. In short, you do it for the community, not just yourself.

I said ICU numbers are not a good way of gauging vaccine effectiveness and they are not. However they quite obviously are an excellent thing to track when you're concerned about ICU capacity.

A vaccine's purpose and a seatbelt's are ultimately the same. They both aim to minimize death.

I would say that if you're old and health compromised getting the vaccine would be beneficial. But not endless shots of it.
If you're in your mid 40's like I am and in relatively good health it makes little sense to the take the jab. Particularly if there's a history of heart disease in your family tree.
It should be a free health choice and our government should not be treating unvaccinated like 2nd class citizens.
