Why did McCain just introduce a bill that would allow Internet Providers to block

This bill would allow Internet Service Providers to slow down and block certain Internet content of their own choice to their subscribers.

The best part is he had the opposite opinion last year. Why does McCain think this can pass, and why doesn't he think everyone is going to be outraged?

Republicans have been for net neutrality since the beginning, but recently a wave of them have been joining the big telephone companies in wanting to charge more for less Internet access (and opposing everyone else).

Can you guess why? Glenn Beck said that net neutrality is a "Marxist plot." Suddenly, it's a debate, and taking away freedom is patriotic. You can't make this stuff up.

If you're a Republican, I hope you'll disagree with Beck about this one. It's really that black and white. Beck is literally in support of restricting our online freedom to make telecommunications companies more money. Then he calls opposing this a "Marxist plot."

The Internet has always been neutral. By Beck's logic, everyone who uses the Internet is a Marxist. Do you see how silly he sounds?

It's surpring how many people have an opinion on net neutrality who don't have a clue what it is?

Net Neutralitty is when your internet service provider (ISP) provides the same bandwith to everything on your connection. Some ISP's will "throttle" or slow down some activities like downloading files or internet phone calls (VOIP) Some cable companies who offer competing VOIP services will reduce the speed of competitiors services on their network. So if you have say xyz cable company for your internet and they want you to bundle their xyz internet phone service they could slow down Vonage to make them less competative.

Net neutrality as a principle is a good thing. I see it as the opposite of censorship or control.

Am I wrong on this?

Government needs to stay out of the internet, period. There's plenty of competition as it is, and if ATT starts to get uppity, a new ISP is a phone call away. The minute some government flunkie starts making noises about regulating the internet, rest assured that your liberty is not the foremost consideration.

Video and VoIP providers will be the largest beneficiaries of such a move at first because ISPs have actively tried to block those services to protect their own voice and video products. This whole Net Neutrality debate is pretty stupid. Just because Internet providers have talked about doing this it doesn't mean they can actually do it. If you understand how broadband networks work you would see that implementing something like that would be seriously hard.

If there was just one company instead of more than one providing internet service we would have a problem but there is more than one. If one decides to do it they will be dropped by most of their describers.

The big myth about this going around is that internet is slowing down due to new technology. That is stupid. If it starts to slow down they will find a way to keep it going as it is. They already have new technology prepared for it. It is in the internet providers best interest to do this.

I am against the FCC having much of anymore involvement in the internet. The Federal Trade Commission has already said they are going after bloggers for advertising things. What is to stop the FCC from doing the exact same thing that Net Neutrality is suppose to "protect" us from?
