where to begin as a newbie to drumming?

Hola mis amigos! I'm a 16 yr old aspiring drummer. I just got my first drum set for my 16th b-day back in may. I got a Mapex (not sure which exact model jus know it's from the Q series) and threw a zildjian crash/ride cymbal and hi-hats up there. Since i've had my drumset its jus been sittin in my room. I have no clue where to start. I'm a complete NEWB!!! ...I would get lessons but i don't have the money for that right now. I did buy Stones stick control and a practice pad and a metrenome, so i know i have all the equipment a beginner should have but i don't know what to do with it! So if anyone has any suggestions plz lemme know. Only nice comments plz 7:^)
P.S.- I want to play rock music then build up to heavy metal (i love those double basses and blast beats....it's like an eargasm)

Check out youtube vids for drum lessons. Lots of simple starter stuff there to get you going. Search for Drum Lessons" or "Beginner drummer, Newbie drummer," etc.

Then, like William said, find songs you like, LISTEN to the drummer, really listen, and try to figure out what he (or she) is doing.

Do NOT be discouraged when you first start playing. It is difficult. If it were easy anyone could do it. Just play along and practice. Relax. You'll get better, I promise!

the best thing to do if your just starting out with drums or any instrument is to figure out what kind of music you want to play. Then watch videos of the drummers your trying to model yourself after and do what they do. Youtube is a great resource for free lesson material.

The one thing you MUST remember though is that it will take time and in no way will you develop rhythm and chops overnight. bottom line is practice until you have blisters or until it sounds good.
