Wages!!

[me who else!]

hey every body!
im a massage therapist working in ireland and i have a lot of clients in the male salon where i work!
but i only have a few regulars!i love my work and so not to get bored i did some more courses!manicure,pedicure,ear candling and body wraps! but i dont think im getting the right wage package!! Could anybody please tell me how much even per hour a massage therapist should be earning! PLEASE!!!!!

That is a tricky question! I know that in the group I work for, although I chose to be self employed, they do have one massage therapist who is employed at a rate of £8.50 an hour, regardless of whether he has any clients or not. He works for 5 hours twice a week, so is guaranteed a fixed wage.

However, I don't really think I would like this, as he has to be on premises for those 5 hours, and if there are no clients 5 hours is a long time to be doing nothing!!

Well thats what i do for 44 hours a week!!!!!!!!!! It drives me mad! Im like the receptionist slash everything else!!!!!!!
It drives me mad! I know that i get my set wage every week but i still think that im getting way under paid! i get less than that an hour and in EUROS!!!!!!!!!!!I must be just in the wrong place! That or im being mad an ass out of![]And im also qualified for more and offer those services also!Ah maybe i should be glad that i get paid to do hardly anything all week! £8.50 an hour isn't at all bad. I'm wondering whether to take the break and jack in the day job and go therapy full time and this would be ideal and not an overly huge paycut.. I'd like to get paid to do nothing, if nothing else, the time could be used distributing leaflets or marketing to people outside to try and drum up trade and that's no mean thing.

It's quite hard to find out what therapists make per hour, they keep it all very low key I find.I think once they have you in, they just assume you'll go with the same wage regardless of improvements made to your skills. It might be worth asking around how much things should cost and approach your boss and ask f there's a chance of a payrise now you have a good skillset, or asking if they will help fund further training.

£8.50 an hour sounds unusually good! I guess it depends on whereabouts you live - London might pay more than averagefor example.

But from my experience, minimum wage is the average, which is not really very much considering the amount of training that goes into a therapists job - working in Asda actually pays more than the minimum wage, and that requires no training!

Some salons offer commission packages where you get a % of sales as a bonus to your wage, or a fixed amount (e.g. 20p per treatment) as an extra. It's good to be paid even when you have no clients, but i'm sure most salon employees will agree that you are rarely doing 'nothing' and that there is always cleaning and stuff to do....

Most massage therapists are self employed and charge around £30 - £40 per hour, we do have to pay tax on that and supply our insurance and equipment.

It also has to see us through any quiet times or times we are incapacitated and can't work, I have not worked for anyone else as a massage therapist but I would want a lot more than what is being intimated in this thread to do so

I work in a dental surgery as a aromatherapist, i spend the majority of my time on reception and a variable time massaging. I am on a basic £6.50 an hour but for every hours massage i do i get £10 an hour. This works well because i have a steady income but also feel apprieciated that my qualifications are recognised. Lets face it if a client is paying £30 for an hour with you it is only fair you get a cut of this. I live in the westcountry so wages are generally low down here but my practise is a private dentist so they do earn good money doubt i'd get this much anywhere else down this end of the country!
Its hard to know what you should earn but i am just grateful for being employed and not having to rely on self employment with no guareented clients/money.

hi im employed in a spa in london. i dont get a basic wage im paid on commission. i get 35% of every treatment that i do that includes massage, reflexology, body wraps and scrubs. the company takes care of the n.i and tax for me and from reading how much other therapists get i wont complain again about notgetting a basic lol, i didnt quite realise how well paid my job is. that said on busy days i do have a lot of clients...on saturday i had 9 and they were all massage!

Hi. I've just read this thread with disbelief! I was employed as a massage therapist in a unisex London sauna 18 years ago and got £5 for a half hour massage and £10 for an hour. You are all being conned working for such low wages - no wonder massage therapists can't afford to have a massage. The trouble is, by accepting these low wages you make it harder for other therapists who want to earn proper money, because the spa, sauna, etc. will know they can get someone to work for peanuts. I suppose thats because we have no union (glad of that, actually). However, everytime one of you accepts a low paid job you are keeping salaries low for everyone else.

Yes Greengrass you are right, I also think that wages are often ridiculously low for therapists. From working myself and knowing other therapists working in salons, earning minimum wage (I actually get paid less than minimum wage) is hardly appealing.

On the other hand, many small salons simply cannot afford to pay high wages for therapists.

I think in many cases, when you are first starting out, you are willing to take anything that is offered, being so glad to be given the chance of a job! Especially when you have no experience.

A few years agoI was told by an interviewer I should be happy to work for less than minimum wage as I needed to build up experience and show dedication to the job! How insulting!

I think you need to take into account your training, I know mine was around the £1500 mark when I did it quite a few years ago, I suppose if you train at night school then the fees will be a lot lower but you still have to put the time and effort into your training all the same

in ireland beauty and massage therapists dont get paid too well, usually startibg at 7/8 euro per hour but as a massage therapist due to the fact the job is quiet tiring you should get an increase quickly enough so mabye mention to you boss about more money, tell him how much your worht it ....u wont know if you dont ask!

Oh my god!! that couldnt any more true if GOD himself said it!!!!!!!!!![&:]I couldnt afford to get a massage if i worked a 60 hour week!!
Our salon is new so i was on really low wages! And was delighted to get a bit of a rise after a few months! I have got it easy in my salon but i hate it! Id much rather be flat out working all the time get what im supposed to and then i would really feel appreciated!

I know i just posted a reply but i got more money working in as a checkout operator in super valu than i do now and less hours and i was always on the go!! I loved it! And plus a pay rise a mention of money and you'd swear my boss was hit by lightning!![sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif]But as you said ur glad of the experience just starting out and my boss said the same "That i should be glad of a start and get the experience! I wouldn't hire anyone unless they had at least 5 year experience!" YE RIGHT!! I was sitting on the checkout one day fresh out of college (Which cost me over €2000 And was totally skint over it! and still am!!!!!!) when my cousins uncle from turkey came up to me and asked me about my massage (and i thought he wanted one like cos he only lives four doors down!) and i was telling him, so he asked me did i want to start with him! So i was like oh my god how often doesthis happen someone coming looking for you to work forthem! i wasstraight in there!!5 years meme hole!!He knows nothing about massage and yet he still tries to tell me my job!LOL!!Any way after getting that off my chest i feel great!! Ha Ha Ha!!!OH MY GOD IM BEING PLAYED FOR A FOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
