Tips for a Newbie Knitter?

I want to start knitting really bad, and I've learned a couple things from tutorials, but I want to make sure I have all the information I'll need for the first project I'll hopefully be accomplishing; a scarf. Hopefully not a pathetically thin scarf with gigantic stitches. So let's say something along the sizing of this : http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_430xN.44280493.jpg Am I way in over my head? I don't want to do a pattern, like I assume that scarf is made in, but that's the sizing for stitches I'd like.
1) What size needle do I use?
2) What do I need to worry about as far as picking yarn?
3) Any common mistakes I should look out for?
4) This is just a poll, canary yellow or coral pink? :)
