Thank you for the kind reflections on the risks an older Westerner faces in Asia. These thoughts are never far from my mind. Not so much paranoid as habitually cautious, and bearing scars to prove the wisdom of perpetually watching one's "six," I try to monitor what I am offered to drink (or eat) and I keep my balance, hands and feet free, an officer's slight smile on my face, coupled with a disposition ready to deal with sudden, inexplicable violence explosively focused on ... me. It's just part of the attitude of being the Alpha, even though now grey, bent and bowed by time.

You are so, so right to warn others about the risks of "spilling one's guts!" I constantly deal with friends and acquaintances who want to save a girl, or are looking for someone on which to superimpose idealistic dreams, are looking to fall in love. Not a good idea! Don't fall for routines to feel sorry for them. Its manipulation and extortion, and it has to be nipped in the bud.

We are so lucky to live in America, but able to travel the world when the urge strikes. But you can never go wrong advising your friends to Check Six, stay sober, and constantly look for the "deal" going down. But while you're at it? Enjoy life to the fullest, because we only get to go around once!

Maybe these women are with the party and were checking up on you. Something that would rarely come first to the mind of a person from a "free" society. Things are different in China today then they were just a decade ago, but make no mistake it is a different society and culture.

I tend to believe the english practice is the primary reason, but think about what you might of been asked in those casual conversations.

Also be careful, and I have to remind myself, what you talk about. The desparity of economic situations, your stories of home might make you look like you are wealthy in their eyes and worth a ransom. Kidnappings and robberies are unheard of, because of tight control of information, but it happens. It happened to a friend. So watch what you say to these girls.

Think about what would get an old horny westerner spilling his life story. Yes, a young sweet innocent looking girl showing an interest in his life experiences. She could be taking notes for a gang or the party. Maybe both.

Just some food for thought. Sorry to sound so glum, it is not all that bad, but just beware!

Thanks for the feedback. I asked because I'd be surprised if they were hookers as T Square is crawling with cops...both uniformed and pain-clothed.

My impression: they're there principally to practice English, and if they can meet an "exotic" western man then so much the better! The English practice is believed to be the key to their future, what with all the rumors of the wild money we are believed to make, and they'd like to position themselves in our system somehow. The first step is to become proficient in English. Official English language school can cost 2000 RMB per month: a real fortune to most of them. Easier to suck it up and take a chance approaching a nice looking American or European and see if he'll chat awhile.

Westerners fascinate them; they've heard so much about us. Remember that for the last 50 years their Chinese traditions denied sex as recreation or for fun and so they're playing a lot of "catch-up." Personally, I met a 30 year old woman "Lucy" who was very pretty and affable at a train station (not Tianamen Square exactly), and we entertained each other with language for an hour or two. It didn't take a lot of effort to segue that into an excellent short term relationship. In fact, my second impression was that she was delighted her new western "friend," me, made the transition to sex so easy for her. Everything I said, did, or asked for was met with a yes; everything. Immediately. With a smile. And sometimes with a big smile.

Hope this story isn't too lame for you. By the way, I'm 64 years old, although healthy and athletic, and that age difference seemed a perfect fit. If you're younger and prettier, you'll probably do even better.

Same thing happened to me when I was in Beijing in 9/04. My findings were that they either wanted to practice their English or more likely, they were tying to sell me Chinese Art by telling me there were students trying to raise money to tour art galleries in the US!

When I was walking around Tiananmen Square one evening I was approached by at least 8 girls who wanted to talk to me. They all seemed pretty friendly and didn't proposition me. I had read that Chinese people like to come and talk to foreigners so they can practice their English so I didn't know if this was what they wanted or if they were hookers.

It struck me as odd that hookers would practice their trade here when the place is crawling with under-cover cops.

Does anyone know if these girls are on the game or did they just want to talk to me?

Oh my god are you really serious?
Have you ever seen real hookers in your life? Not that I have any experience in it but I can certainly recognize one.
These young ladies who often come by two just want to lead you into a place (typically a tea shop) and manage to make you pay about 500-1000 RMB for it. It's totally harmless exept for your wallet. You just have to smile to them, tell them no and they will understand you are not interested. It's a trick that's all and a pretty gentle one.
Of course, if you follow anyone (expecially creepy guys who promise you "young lady massage" which I never did), you may have problems, but in this case I think you deserve it.
