TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Midwifery Department, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University in West Sumatra, Yulizawati, said that oxytocin massagecould be a solution to reduce pain in mothers giving birth.
"Based on the research conducted, oxytocin massage could be a promising solution for women to reduce pain during childbirth," she said in Padang on Sunday, October 13, 2024.
In the study, Yulizawati and her colleagues surveyed 300 mothers, 32 percent experienced severe pain during childbirth and 57 percent admitted to feeling moderate pain. She explained that oxytocin massage is a technique that does not involve drugs and aims to increase the production of oxytocin hormone in the body.
This hormone is often called the love hormone and plays a vital role during childbirth. Oxytocin hormone helps stimulate uterine contractions and provides a calming effect, which can reduce pain and anxiety. By utilizing oxytocin massage, pregnant mothers can feel more comfortable and calm during the birthing process.
Benefits of oxytocin massage
Based on the research conducted, oxytocin massage significantly reduces the pain experienced by mothers during childbirth. This means, when oxytocin production increases, the discomfort duringchildbirth can decrease.
"This will certainly make the birthing experience more enjoyable. Oxytocin massage not only functions to reduce pain but also helps pregnant mothers feel more relaxed," she said.
In addition, oxytocin massage can also help enhance the emotional attachment between the mother and the baby. Their attachment is crucial for the emotional development of both the mother and the baby.
"Through this massage, mothers not only feel physical comfort but also build a better bond with their baby," said Yuliza.
The process of administering oxytocin massage can be carried out by trained healthcare professionals such as midwives or spouses. This technique involves gentle massages on body parts such as the back, abdomen, and legs, with the aim of creating a sense of comfort and relaxation.
