Thai Massage dvd

Hello,

I have been wanting to take a Thai massage class for awhile now but finances havent allowed... I saw there were a couple of dvds showing some step by step Thai massage floating around on amazon.com. Has anyone watched any of these? Are they any good?

I have not seen any of the DVD's, so I can't comment on them.

Being a practitioner of Thai Massage, I don't think it is possible to learn the modality in anything other than a hands-on setting. I took a 50 hour intensive over a 10 day period in a residential setting. I lived and breathed Thai massage over those 10 days. I felt comfortable giving Thai massage to my clients at the conclusion of the class. It is a complex, rich and nuanced modality; and I'm truly a neophyte and have a lot to learn, even after a 50 hour class and #'s of sessions received, practiced, and given.

If you want to be a Thai Massage practitioner, I recommend saving up for a class from an experienced instructor. The DVD's might be useful to add a few moves to your table massage, but not to learn the modality.

I agree with the second poster. I bought the Chuck Duff Northern Thai Massage dvd set and it's a very good quality dvd w/ lots of techniques. I plan to take the 1st level thai certification in July so the dvd is just a little taste of what thai massage is about. Hopefully I'll be able to put everything together July.

I have the Table Thai DVD by Margie Meshew. The DVD is beautiful, and there are step by step instructions. However, I must say that had I not taken a floor class with her I would be struggling to learn the techniques. For me there is not quite enough information on the DVD. I'm sure over time, had I not taken her class I could have figured it out. But I think with a new modality like this, hands on, in person training should not be skipped. There are so many nuances that you just can't pick up through a DVD. I think they are great tools to use after the class however.

Chuck is awesome. Intelligent, well-spoken, thoroughly trained and experienced. I recently took his Clinical Thai Bodywork level I class, and I highly recommend his classes to anyone interested in learning Thai massage. He and I completed our basic certification courses with the same instructor several years ago, and all I can say is that I am in awe of his interpretation of the modality and his superior teaching skills. I have purchased both his Northern dvd and Thai Massage for the Mat and Table, both of which have greatly complemented my work.

I agree with the other posters that it is necessary to study in-person with a qualified instructor in order to learn Thai bodywork. You absolutely need a teacher to observe and correct your body mechanics. I also very highly recommend having a solid personal yoga practice prior to practicing Thai.

I agree that you need to take a class in Thai massage. It's soooo completely different from Swedish. It was quite an adjustment for me.

I recommend checking out the website for the Thai Healing Alliance. My instructor, who I think very highly of, is a founding member of this organization. They have listings of approved schools and courses.
