Terrified please help

HI Guys,

Ive only just found you and was hoping you could help me out.

Ive had terrible lumbar pain for about 4 years now which all the GP's I saw refused to address, I developed Sciatica about a year ago which over the last 6 months has got a lot worse. I now have no feeling in my right thigh and pain all the way down my leg (and sometimes the other leg too) it has left me walking like a crab as I have developed a severe pelvic tilt to prevent loading. I got to the stage where I was crawling around the floor in tears and all my GP did was pump me full of Diazepam etc while I was sat on the waiting list for the back service.

It was only when I started to have have slight waterworks problems they took me seriously, I was sent straight up to A&E and had an MRI the next day. 3 weeks later I got my results which showed my L4/L5 & L5/S1 discs had turned into what looked like a grey mush on the MRI. That was friday and I am being admitted for a double discectomy tomorrow.

What terrifies me is that it has all happened so quickly I havent had a chance to discuss the pros/cons of having the surgery. To make things worse, my sister had a discectomy followed by a fusion about 5 years ago and it has left her with so much scar tissue she lives in a near vegetative stated dosed up on dihydrocodiene.

I started a new job a couple of months ago which I love and has taken me 10 years to find but it involves alot of time in the car.

I reall dont know whether Im doing the right thing or not.

Starsky, I am not sure wether I 'should' say anything at this late stage and am sorry if I am wrong for doing so, I am sure you are 'bricking it' right now without my comments! But I will just hate myself if I don't just say, that you really must be sure about this procedure, you already know the possible outcome (Sister). You are right to be concerned about your Surgeons 'rush' after such a long and ineffective wait for help, I am so sorry for your predicement.

The bowel issues are part of spine surgeons 'go for surgery indicaters', I think the logic is, that you are in severe pain 'now' so if they dont cure you they have not made anything worse and they are therefore protected somewhat.
If you need more time to think, please tell them, for your own sake!

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I must admit that my experience is often that people I know, have felt they had to do what their Doctors and Surgeons want, and that Doctors and Surgeons are generally not good at spending the time to discuss issues. I know there will be those that are, but it is just my experience that most are not.

Try and remember that it is your body, and ultimately the Doctors and surgeons are being paid by you via your national insurance contributions. You therefore have the right to expect them answer your questions and give you as much time as you need.

It is worth remembering that doctors and surgeons are experts in their field, but they are not God and rarely know or understand many alternative solutions, if any exist.

Whatever you decide I hope it works out for the best.

Sending you much love and reiki for a good outcome whatever you decide. Shame you found this site so late, but waterwork problems don't seem to go away s maybe for the best.

What is more annoying is the long time you have suffered with not much help
