A 2024 study published in the Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice journal explored the positive impact of tactile massage on adolescents with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The findings reported a reduction in self-reported symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention, a decrease in parent-reported hyperactivity and oppositional defiant disorder, improved sleep patterns, and reduced pain. These positive outcomes were achieved with excellent compliance and no adverse effects.

Dr S H Mittal, senior consultant, department of neurology at Sharda Care Healthcity & Sharda Hospital, said that massage therapy has shown promise in improving focus in adolescents with ADHD. This is due to physical and psychological aspects being improved by massage therapy.

“ADHD is often characterised by difficulties with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. These are linked to neurotransmitter imbalances, particularly to that of dopamine and norepinephrine. Massage can help by stimulating the release of these neurotransmitters, promoting relaxation and thereby reducing stress. This combination helps improve concentration and decrease impulsive behaviour,” he said.
Dr Parth Nagda, consultant, psychiatry, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, said that massages can have physical benefits such as calming and relaxation due to regulation of heart rate and blood pressure. “Massages reduce heightened levels of arousal in children with ADHD, along with stress and anxiety by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol and also helps with better sleep and emotional regulation as well,” he said.
According to him, an ideal massage duration for improving focus typically ranges from 15 to 30 minutes. However, both shorter and longer duration of the sessions have been shown to have some effects. “Shorter sessions can help with immediate stress relief, while the longer sessions will help with deeper relaxation and sustained effects. Regular massage can help with cumulative improvement in attention and mood,” he said.

Dr Mittal suggested complementary approaches like structured routines, exercise, and cognitive behavioural therapy to build coping skills. “Exercises that involve coordination enhance cognitive function, while mindfulness practices like deep breathing improve attention. Additionally, proper sleep hygiene is crucial, as poor sleep exacerbates focus issues,” he said.

These combined strategies underscore a holistic approach to managing ADHD symptoms and enhancing focus in adolescents.
