A prominent member of Ian Paisley's ultraconservative Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland resigned Friday over allegations that he hired a male prostitute for sex in a Belfast hotel. Paul Berry, 29, has denied the allegations, which were front-page news in Northern Ireland tabloid newspapers in July 2005. But in Northern Ireland High Court, he announced his resignation from the nation's largest political party in a statement issued through his lawyers.

"The past number of months has been a particularly stressful time for my wife, family, and myself, and we want closure on this matter. We have come to the conclusion that there is no future for me within the DUP, and on that basis we have decided that is best for me to resign," Berry said.

His lawyers also dropped efforts to prevent the Democratic Unionist leadership from suspending his membership. The court ordered him to pay $5,250 in the Democratic Unionists' legal costs. "This is an action which the party considers should never have been brought," said the Democratic Unionists' lawyer, John McBurney. "The party regrets that the action was commenced, but is content that it has ended in the way it has this morning."

Paisley, 79, runs his own fundamentalist Protestant denomination, the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, which has actively campaigned against gay rights under the slogan "Save Ulster from sodomy."


Berry, who in 1998 became the youngest elected member of Northern Ireland's legislature, had a popular base built on his reputation as a gospel singer. After the Sunday World newspaper reported that he had met a male prostitute for sex, Berry said he had paid the man to massage his back for medical purposes. (AP)

Stringfellow is given go-ahead to open nightclub in Dublin

Peter Stringfellow was given permission last night to open a nightclub boasting erotic dancers in Dublin.


The application had been opposed by local residents and a pressure group supporting the victims of prostitution.

Dublin District Court was told that although female strippers would dance beside tables and on stage, there would be no lap dancing involving physical contact with customers.

The club is the third such venue to be launched by the nightclub entrepreneur. The other Stringfellows are in London and Paris.

Locals living near Parnell Street, where the club will be situated, said they were concerned about the type of clientele the club would attract in an area where a large number of elderly and young people lived.

Mr Stringfellow claimed his club would gentrify the area and said that residents should accept his international reputation.

The North Inner City Residents Group raised objections, saying it did not want the club in an area with a girls' secondary school, a toy shop, a cinema and corporation flats.

The residents' campaign was supported by some Dublin City councillors and Ruhama, a group working with the victims of prostitution.

Court adjourns application to open Stringfellows club

AN application by a company backed by London nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow to open a strip club in Dublin was adjourned until next Monday.

Sabley Taverns Ltd want to set up a Stringfellows-type strip club in the former Playmates lapdancing club in Parnell Street.

However, a large number of residents, an organisation fighting prostitution and the previous owners of the premises are objecting.

Dublin District Court heard yesterday that two hours were available next Monday for the hearing of the case which the applicants believed was sufficient time to deal with the issues involved.

However, Gerard Brady BL, for the residents, said this was not enough time, nor could adequate notice be provided to the large number of objectors involved.

Hi all. Just to say that I went to Dublin last weekend. Pretty dire. Went by taxi to the main areas (Fitzwilliam Sq, Cumberland St, Wilton Cres., 'pepper canister' church etc. Nothing happened until about 20.30 on the Fri night when I spotted two youngish ladies in short skirts etc. walk up Cumberland St towards Fitz. Sq. I was at the jct. of Cummberland and Wilton at the time and they did react to passing cars. Still, couldn't be 100% sure they were working. I never saw them again, even on taxi runs later. Next action came around 21.30 when I spotted a young girl (late teens, early 20's, blonde, slim) at the cnr of Cumberland & Wilton (where I was stood b4). She was talking to 2 guys in an unmarked car. the cabbie thought they might be Garda so we left them to it. On a run by the canal, we saw a largish blonde walking along who was dressed for it. We came back and caught up with the young girl. Said she had a place etc. but wanted at least 100 euros!!! We later caught up with the larger lady who also settled on Wilton (nr the canal). She was older (at least 30's) but with this huge belly. Dressed in this short, tight black no. that didn't do her any favours. She also had a place but wanted 150 GBP, which lowered to 100 soon after!!!! I asked her if she was pregnant (I'm convinced she was) but she denied it. Called it a night, about 30 euros lighter on taxi fares!!
