delayed penalty advantage? I was watching a game between Calgary and Edmonton last night (Yes, I'm a geek). The refs called a delayed penalty on Edmonton, but Calgary was still attacking and had possession.

Anyway, long story short a Calgary backward pass was mishandled and ended up almost going into their empty goal. Otherwise I wouldn't have even noticed that there was no goalie.

So do the teams on the advantage always pull the goalie for an extra attacker?

taking advantage of the delayed penalty by putting the extra attacker on is very common. if you notice in the nhl, the goalies always make the move towards the bench. sometimes there's not enough time for them to get there before the other team touches the puck...so you might never even notice the attempt to put the extra attacker out there. but it always happens. even at lower levels it happens (high school, college, etc)

They always will, simply because it gives them an extra attacker and there is no threat for a goal against, because as soon as Edmonton touches the puck they stop play.

Happens almost every time. This gives the team an extended power play until the offending team touches the puck.

Most teams will pull their goaltender on a delayed power play. The referee is supposed to blow the whistle the instant the puck is touched by a member of the team being penalized, so there's no way that team could score an empty-net goal by shooting the puck at the empty net. Now, as you mentioned, it IS possible for an empty-net goal to be scored if the team with the delayed penalty advantage mishandles the puck, but the chances of that happening are slim to none.

It always happens unless the goalie isn't paying attenrion or doesn't know which team is getting the penalty.

Yes, they always do that. If the other team touches the puck, the play is dead, so there is no chance of them scoring, unless, like you said, the team going on the power play mishandles the puck.
