Some questions

Hello,
I'm yann and I'm a student in ITEC massage & therapy in Ireland.
I was wondering if any people on this website use other stuff than towel to set up the couches.
I explain myself, for my studies, I practise massage on friend, and I move to their place. It's very heavy to carry:
1 pareo
2 baths sheet
2 baths towel
2 smalls towel
1 couch cover
and it is just for one person, in addition of the rest of the material.
The other problem is I'm living in a flatshare, so it's not easy to wash and dry all this towel after each massage.

So, if anybody can give me advice, I'll be happy read them,and thanks them

Hi, for each massage, I only use 2 bath sheets and a couch cover. Not sure why you are using all of those for one client. I'd get your friend to provide the towels. They're getting a free massage!!

I use those because I have to practise for my diploma. But it could be a better idea to just take 2 bath sheet. You don't use sarong?

I don't often massage the stomach on women (main reason they don't like showing their tummies), but I have a spare towel to use just in case, to cover the upper chest area !

Hi Yann, if you use a blanket to cover the whole body you could place a small towel underneath to cover the breast area and just slide the blanket down should they want their tummy worked on, alot easier for you to work with, don't forget to ask them to hold onto the top of the towel when you slide the blanket down to protect their modesty!

That's the same style of blanket I have just got JoJo - they are lovely and fluffy and nice and warm. I think they are much nicer than towels. I got mine from Matalan

To those of you who use fleecy blankets - are you using them instead of towels to cover over the top of the clients (ie on their bare skin?)? And if so, do you wash them after each client?

Or are you using them with some other form of covering between the blanket and their skin?

I'm not being critical by the way (each to their own) - I'm merely curious.

For home visits, I use two 2m length of 112cm wide poly cotton fabric and a 2m length of 150cm wide polar fleece from the fabric shop - very light, very easy to wash, very fast drying, and the 2 sheets are tiny when folded up. The sheets get changed every client, the polar fleece gets washed at least once per week, sometimes more, depending if I have clients putting their arms out over the top of it. I also have a terry couch cover under the bottom sheet that gets changed every week. The polar fleece lives inside my folded up massage couch and is only used when needed (eg they haven't got the room warm enough), couch cover also lives inside the table and gets used every client. The poly cotton sheets are like long sarongs, but they dry a lot faster than 100% collon and a LOT faster than towels. I also have a 30cm long 112cm width of extra fabric if I want to do any stomach massage for women, but since most women I work on are pregnant, I don't do much stomach massage, they just want their back done.

I use disposable face cradle covers, I think people like the fact I let them throw out the cradle cover, that way the KNOW it's clean. I've got one of the face cradle attachments, it lives inside the folded up table too.

Carrying loads of stuff to a home visit is knackering, even if it's only a few yards from car to front door. It also looks disorganised too if you arrive trying to juggle tons of stuff and car keys. Why not tell client that you'll need a few things when you arrive - enough space to work and a couple of clean towels please.

Fleecey blankets are very cheap in supermarkets, eg George at Asda. You can get a decent luggage trolley from a hardware store to put your table onto which will save your back and keep everything off the dirt while waiting for door to open.

Hi Yann, my personal preference is two large towels when i do friends at home, i'm not practising at the moment but If I were to have a few clients a day I'd probably use sheets in the summer and pop a blanket over the top if the the client was cold, once you get used to moving the towels around on your clients as you work you'll find a way that suits you best, sounds like you have alot of towels to contend with right now though!

Thanks for your reply. I hope you didn't think I was accusing you of being unhygienic? It's just that you said that using a blanket meant 'less washing and drying' so I just wondered what you meant by that.

But I guess what you meant was not so much 'less washing' (cos you still have to wash them after each client, as you have said) but 'less drying' because they dry so much quicker than heavy cotton towels.

I'm lucky in that I work from home (going mobile seems like FAR too much hard work!! LOL!). So my set-up is a 2" memory foam mattress topper, followed by a full sized electric blanket, followed by a thick fleecy underblanket, followed by a terry towelling single bed sheet (which gets changed after every client). The fleecy underblanket gets washed once a week.

Over the top of my clients I use 2 bath sheets (or nothing if the client prefers to be undraped). My small treatment room is always nice and cosy so I've never had the need for an additional blanket - but I always keep one handy just in case!

On the occasions when I've arranged for a massage therapist to come to my house to massage me I have ALWAYS provided towels, sheets, etc. It wouldn't occur to me to make them bring their own.

I'm sure most clients would be more than happy to provide towels if they were asked, which would certainly save on the weight of stuff being carried by mobile therapists.

I have thought about asking clients if they would use their own towels (1 foot massage client does, as I go in on the day he has his washing done, so no worries there) ! But I likes what I likes lol I use white towels for reflexology and hands/arms and feet/lower leg massages.

Got a nice big fleecy throw from B&M 4 quid. Looks exactly the same as the Tesco 12 quid jobs. We'll see after washing!! Bigger than a bath sheet. Matalan didn't have much, in in my branch. Did get a camping one by Trespass for 4 quid, which is smaller that the B&M one. Looking forward to using them.
