Not talked about much here, but this near-HDR tavern is spacious, no folks most of the time, and while working girls are allowed, none in evidence Saturday night. Pluses include 3 pool tables level with good felt and reasonable-to-good sticks, comfy chairs in area, and a well-stocked juke box with all kinds of Latin AND Gringo stuff (Doors, Stones, REM, Dylan, Led Zepp and Best of Disco Vols. 1 & 2) with a dance area. Couple of Big Screens--and damn near deserted (scattered Ticos at the bar). I don't get it--is this being run just as a tax writeoff or just to block somebody else getting on HDR's turf? Anyway me and my date had a grand time for 2 hours, then down the street to Chelle's for desayuno with a Spanish guitar player serenading. Nice break from the customary-and-usual.

It's current "customer situation" is a metaphor for the "current situation" in San Jose specifically and in Costa Rica generally. It mirrors what is going on at the New York Bar and it mirrors what is going on at the Del Rey.

Between the later part of 2006 and present, I have noticed a distinct decline in not only routine "upkeep" of properties, but a significant drop in the amount of "talent" pretty much anywhere.....from the Del Rey even over to the SL. It ain't like it was; the chicas are nowhere near as attractive; the ones who continue to troll have many kilo's too many of body fat and don't look as fine. I believe anyone who is being honest with themself is also reaching this conclusion. Even North Americans "settling" in San Ramon have reached the conclusion they too must add bars, razor wire, shards of glass, etc., etc., etc. in order to be culturually sensitive and adapt to the local architechtural style (It's NOT a "style"....I'm fucckin' with you on that one....but add the jive they have and are....).

Just as Buffalo Springfield noted "Something's happenin' here/What it is ain't exactly clear".

Costa Rica just may be fished out and overpriced: Foodstuffs (from the grocery stores like Auto Mercado and M&M) are distinctly more expensive than in the USA; "service" of all kinds is deteriorating; I sensed a MUCH stronger hustle from any and all my trip in August; and it does bode well for future returns. The USA Ambassador and CR Pres are pissing at each other. The party may be coming to an end....or if nothing else, may be being held in abeyance for quite some time. A recent report noted that Panama had surpassed Costa Rica in it's "liveability"...particularly as a "retirement destination".

What is consistent in CR is the ability to get a hotel room at better prices than in the USA and with reasonably "good" service and such. Thus, if one can simply relax and enjoy the differing sites, sounds, and commerce around one, simply "hanging out"...whatever that is....taking in different foods, blah, blah, blah....and the occassional bird of the night that passes the audition....it can be a good time. But it most for sure is NOT a time to buy....anything.....

Clearly, however, there is no abundance of chicas as once there was.....and the vast majority of the one's still plying the trade got kilos for days, or a vocabularly that starts at CIEN and goes up....not down....*shrug*

Steven 1- i did not find this to be the case on my last trip 8-14-8-19.Plenty of girls and enough mongers.I did not run into the bad attitudes that some have and i thought the mix of girls was the same as always just not as overwhelming.

I have been coming down to C.R. between 4 and 6 times per year since early '06.

Monkey Bar - I have NEVER seen more than 5 people in the place at any 1 time. Most times there is only 1 person there; the bartender.

Prices (NOT girls) = absolutely agree. I see very few bargains around except for accommodations.

Prices and selection of girls - Not much has changed since my 1st trip. Sometimes the selection and prices are better than others. This past April the selection was very good, especially good at the Sportsmen.

they are letting the lease go next year. I believe the little marlin and monkey bar were put in just to keep out competition, because monkey bar does not make money and that is why they are letting the lease go. I think they thought if it just broke even it would be worth it to keep competiion out but it loses too much money.

My opinion is that the Monkey bar has always suffered from a lack of real management. The place is right across from the Del Rey, has nice facilities (nice pool tables) and still nobody goes there. I can tell you why *I* haven't gone there in ages. The bartenders get bored and to keep themselves amused like to play Reggaton at 11 on a scale of 10.

I don't go to an empty bar to listen to somebody else's idea of great music at earsplitting volume. I used to like to play pool there a little, but they eventually chased me out. It's a vicious circle. There are no customers, the girls are bored, they turn up the music and nobody wants to go in (YEAH... I know... some of you LIKE that music. Fine. Apparently there aren't enough of you to keep the Monkey Bar busy.)

I always thought that the Monkey Bar was owned by the same owners of the HDR/BM. And they (the owners) don't care if they get patrons in the place or not. :shock:

Hell, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to me. By owning it themselves (instead of having a "viable" competitor across the street), they can write off their losses - which (I have a feeling) is much less than what they'd lose if someone else owned it and took away business from the BM. And if you think the owners of the HDR/BM/KL/MB are hurting for money, then I got a bridge in the Everglades to sell you! My dos colones... :|

I have heard this time and again,...I wish I could have found San Jose sooner than I did,..because if the women, and number of women were better in the "day", I just cant imagine....Hopefully with the takeover of congress and the senate about to take place in November, :shock: the dollar value will rise,......only with the complete banishment of the federal resereve, (neither federal, or reserve), can we once again enjoy the power of the American dollar.
