I have a 7 year old Border Collie who I've had since she was 2. She's the family pet. She's never been socialized to be with other dogs and will growl/bark/go crazy when we see one on a walk. She can be aggressive with other dogs, but, when I hired a trainer to help her with that, she was on her best behavior and did not act aggressively. It pretty much made me look like an idiot
I just got a Japanese Spitz mix who is 3 years old. He's currently living in my room in the basement, where my Border Collie isn't allowed to go. I live in the second master bedroom, so my room is huge (so he isn't too confined being down here).
The thing is, I'm moving out of my house in about a month or so. I was planning on getting a dog when I moved, but I fell in love and couldn't pass up the opportunity to give him a home (he was a rescue). Should I try to go through the process of introducing the dogs? Or should I just keep them separate until I move out? Any advice/suggestions/opinions?
I will be living in a different state, but I plan to go back and forth between places for a little while until everything is set up. After that, they will only see each other when I come back to visit every few months or so.
Like I said, I tried to socialize her with other dogs. The trainer didn't believe me when I said she was aggressive, so she didn't feel I needed to socialize her.
My other dog has free roam of the basement. He just prefers to stay in my room and I keep him in here when I have to leave. My room is literally HUGE. It's the size of some people's entire apartment/small house. He has plenty of room to run around.
Basically, what I'm asking is... is it worth spending the time to introduce them? Or would it be pointless in the end because I'm moving out and taking my Japanese Spitz with me?
