Should i introduce another gerbil?

I used to have two gerbils but one of them died last week. I understand gerbils are a lot more unhappy when they are alone so am wondering whether i should introduce another gerbil. Both gerbils were one and a half years old so it was quite a shock when one of them died. It turned out he had cancer on his scent gland which had spread all over causing him to die a little earlier than we expected.I have experience in introducing gerbils. All i need to know is whether elmo (my remaining gerbil) would be happier with a friend and whether it would work or not if there was an age gap. Thanks
