Real reason prostitution is illegal in Canada

For a long time, I couldn’t understand why prostitution isn’t legal in Canada. It’s legal in some states, and in many countries around the world including western powerhouses such as Germany.

The argument has always been STIs and women forced into the trade.

Countries that have legalized test the women very frequently and, since licenses are required, both the above arguments were reduced in frequency.

I believe the real reason it’s illegal here is balance of power between genders. Child support laws are one-sides and are clearly in favour of females.

Every time two start dating, women around say “you two should have a baby....”. The question is why??? 40 years old, already divorced with kids, why have more?? It’s about power and leverage.

I have some very wealthy friends that never want to marry and only use their own condoms. They even flush them down the toilet themselves and watch them go down to prevent “basting”. I heard athletes do this as well.

If prostitution were to become legal, there would be less “oups babies” resulting in less child support and therefore a shift in power. The entire court system, lawyers, etc, would be disrupted. To be honest, I believe power would be more even between genders if prostitution were legalized.

Two consenting adults and a transaction. Everyone wins.

I’ve done the math and there are over 2,000,000 visits to MPs and SPs in the GTA every year. Maybe more. Granted there are repeats in there, still a huge number of people that frequent such places. Spas are there because there is a market.

If you read up on it, it’s over a billion dollar industry in Canada.

I am pretty sure that it *is* legal but it is illegal to be a pimp or profit off of the efforts of a prostitute. This is where it becomes problematic; most prostitutes cannot afford or know how to set up shop themselves. Plus the stigma.

This answer I agree with. Nothing to do with "oops babies", or not being able to tax them, it would be extremely easy to do that. If it was legal there wouldn't be a large influx of people hiring hookers who weren't already doing it. Everyone I know who smokes weed did so way before it was legalized. I have yet to meet a smoker who only started after it was legalized. I do think it does give women some leverage in a marriage where they're withholding sex and using it as a weapon, not to mention, every father's fear that his daughter will turn to that life, but that goes for stripping too which is legal.

Trudeau said he legalized pot to eliminate the black market, he said "there's no black market for alcohol". So really, I can't see why it isn't legal.

Quite frankly I think most people, law enforcement and politicians do not care that prostitution exists, they just do not want to take the credit/blame for legalizing/legitimizing it, they want it kept out of sight and they do not want underage people involved or sex trafficking. I bet that at least 50% of men see a sex worker at least once in their life. The laws that be are rarely enforced, but they are in cases where people are too obvious about it. Until recently the same rationality applied to possession of marijuana and magic mushrooms. So put it down to laziness and political cowardice.
