I went to see a newly licensed bodyworker yesterday. She is "older" and on her second career. The work was just fine. But I loved that, before she began, she asked, "Would you like me to tell you what I'm doing as I work?"

Sure. Why not? Let's see what you've got.

Oh, I loved it. I don't care if she was reciting her routine so she didn't forget it or what. It gave me confidence in what she was doing (paying attention) and gave me an opportunity to respond to her work.

We talked afterwards and she said that my response to her "tour" was exactly what she was hoping for. She knows she only has one first impression and she wants to inspire as much confidence as she can.

Anyone else out there have some goodies?

That is very interesting, I don't think I would do it, not my style. I have been thinking about those important little "extras" lately. To give to clients bottled water, a small at home gift (bath salts teabag ect..). Welcome notes, thank you for referral notes, and we miss you notes mailed. Follow up phone calls to see how a client is doing after a massage.

I wouldn't want a running commentary druing the treatment. I rarely fall asleep but I do like to zone out.

I ask clients if there are any areas that they would like me to focus on. If someone wants me to just work for an hour on the bak, neck and shoulders then I will do it. If they have no preferences then at the start I'll let them know which areas I'll be covering. In terms of the massage strokes/techniques I use I never know what I'll do until I start working on the body.

I'll give clients photo copies of stretching exercises to do and or ways to use tennis or golf balls at home for self massage. I like to empower my clients to help themselves alongside regular sessions from me.

I have a heated blanket on the massage table which keeps clients warm and cosy during their session.

Sometimes it is the little extra touches that really make the massage experience great for a client.

I've had some clients ask for this... I am happy to oblige.

One of my energy work teachers basically narrates her entire sessions, which is very valuable in my opinion. People often can't feel the effects of energy work as precisely as they can more physical work, and this really helps folks actively participate, and feel like they know what's been "done" to them and gives them ideas for how to continue their process after they leave the office.
