Please help me understand why people would go along with some nonsense that

they've just been introduced to.? If a person is approached by a missionary from say, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, or Scientology, why would they accept the propaganda that they've been given and go along with the group?

What sort of thought processes would they have? "Hmmm... this seems like it's the truth. I'm going to join them and give them all my hard earned cash!"

This issue has often bugged me, and I can't get it out of my mind. These suckers seem otherwise intelligent.

Scientology is the one that baffles me. They want your money almost immediately. You can technically get away with being a Mormon or Jehovah's Witness for a while without paying anything.

I think most people that go along with it are either very lonely and looking for community, or had some sort of influence by them in the past.
