The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) has issued a summary suspension of a licensed massage therapist — after he reportedly “groped the breasts and tweaked the nipples” of a patient.
The incident involving massage therapist Patrick McGrirr allegedly took place in Newport in April of this year.

RIDOH on Record
In its summary suspension of McGirr last week, RIDOH wrote the following:
“On or about April 25, 2024, RIDOH received notice that, during practicing massage therapy on or about April 18, 2024, Respondent groped the breast and tweaked the nipples of Patient A.
That, at all times during which the incident described in the paragraph(s) above took place, Respondent was practicing massage therapy at Bellevue Massage and Bodyworks in Newport, Rhode Island.
After review of available evidence, the Director of Health has found reasonable cause to believe that Respondent is practicing in Violation of RI General Laws in this case, and finds that public health, safety, or welfare imperatively requires emergency action."
According to RIDOH, “Charges will be issued, and a hearing shall be scheduled within 90 days of the issuance of this summary suspension.”
“Patrick was put on leave as soon as we heard about the allegations made against him. He is no longer working at Bellevue Massage anymore,” said Bellevue Massage on Monday.
There are currently no criminal charges pending against McGirr.
“There is no statutory requirement for RIDOH to notify law enforcement about an act like inappropriate touching. However, as a matter of protocol, we work with complainants to engage law enforcement if we believe that a crime may have been committed by a health professional. Each case is different,” said RIDOH spokesperson Joseph Wendelken on Monday. “Sometimes this is not necessary because a complainant notified RIDOH and law enforcement simultaneously, or notified law enforcement before the issue was brought to RIDOH’s attention.”
