My experience has been more along the lines of SuperGato. I have family members called Monica, and sometimes we will call her Moni, but not too much, but I didn't think the names Monique and Monica were related, but I just checked and it is, and it said Monique is a name that has roots in France.

You guys have NO idea of how ridiculous the name "Mona" sounds in Spanish.
Mona in Spanish means she-monkey, the female of the monkey species.
If someone was named Mona within a club, she would be the butt of all jokes in said establishment.
They would be calling her "changa".

Also, "Mona" or the male genre is one of many Mexican modisms that mean "dude" or "guy" as in "Y ese "mono"" or "Y esa mona" in the sense of whose's that guy/girl.

Am sure that that asking for a "Mona" at AB cracked a couple of smiles on the waiters.
