I visited most of my favorite nightime local places such as VIP's1, Le Bella Mansion,Monaco,Las Margaritas, Arcadas and Molono Rojo. Las Margaitas was fun as always Friday and Saturday(slow outher nights) and most outer places were slow most nights but Molino Rojo was busy every night and had decent talent every night including Sunday to Tueasday when everywhere else was dead. It was the local place for talent every night and a number of my CRT buddies were there as well some of those nights. Not sure what it was but they were the busiest tico bar every night last trip. Most nights there were several appealing ladies to chose from and definitely a place worth a visit for those ready to experiece the truly local scene. Also a cheap place to fine a lady out to go home with you if you can negotiate a good price with the girl. About 2 AM ladies come in from all over town who didn't get work to try to make a few colones including Del Rey ,Key Largo and numerous strip clubs around town.rbc100

When is the best time to go to the Molino Rojo and is it safe? I don't speak spanish and the last time I was in costa rica, I asked the taxi driver to take me to molino Rojo. He told me that it didn't open until 8 pm. I was worried about going to a part of CR that I was unaware of.

Molino Rojo is best late night like after midnight and even better at 2 AM. Driver was likely right and not much need to go before 11.They stay open to 5 or 5:30 AM. It is not in a good neighborhood but taxi takes you right to the door and they all know the place. It is easy cathing a taxi when you leave any time of night.You encounter some strange street people just try to keep your distance form them. I have been 60 to 70 times I would guess and never had a problem speaking very minimal spainish at first.rbc100

RBC i agree Molino rocks :twisted: had TBFE from there take taxis there and from. it seems that no area at night is safe :!: walking from the dr to the pres is an adventure , with machettes,guns and a pack of youths messing with LH . pura vida ps . welcome TicoFrankie to CRT

There are security risks about anywhere in San Jose at night.Lots of problems around Del Rey and Presidente area as well as shooting reported often at El Pueblo and these are more upscale tourist areas.Truthfully tourist areas are becoming some of the higher risk areas these days. MR is in a shady area but never had a problem in many visits.I would expect problems occuring a due to disagreement between locals and not targeting gringos. I have been treated well in all local places I have been.rbc100

Molino Rojo

I had a blast when I was there on a late Sun night. The 2 bartenders spoke English ( Walter and Howard) they helped interpt for me. My Spanish is bad at best but I was talking with one girl and I still think she was speaking some other form of Spanish, like a drunkin jibberish. None the less, I recommend MR and will go there every trip for a good time.
Some cute girls as well. I think the charge to take a girl to the back room was 7.5 K colones ($15 USD)


BTW, I was the only gringo in the bar and I felt perfectly comfortable.

I am familiar with the area where Molino Rojo is. The best advice is to take a cab for going overthere. The same applies if you are leaving.

The MR is close enough to walk to but far enough to make it dangerous. The actual neighborhood is a bit below average but I feel less in danger there than outside the Del Rey lately. I may get approached by a begger or street person or 2, but nothing like the number in the heart of the gulch. The police do drive by fairly often and I have been asked to produce ID twice by them, and searched for drugs. Luckily, I had my papers in order and drugs are so far in my past I wouldn't know what they measure marijuana in nowadays. Grams?

If you get totally out of control drunk, you are in major danger anywhere except locked inside your room alone. And even then, those tile floors can carry nasty fungal diseases!
