Hello all.

What should I take to the clients house for a mobile Swedish massage service?
I assume I just take my massage table, towels, oil and record cards. Do others also take candles and oil burners to set the atmosphere?
My tutor said just take the basics, what do others take? Also, I have trouble erecting my table by myself, is it unprofessional to ask the client for a hand?

Hi Rebecca, Im new on this site, so if i send this wrong then ignore me.

I do all beauty treatments including Massage Mobile, I like to try and set a bit of an atmosphere,
I think you have to make an effort to be better than your competition,
I take my couch, towels, Blankets, Oil. But I have a heated blanket under the bottom towel in winter to make sure my client doesn't get cold, I have a digital radio so I can play relaxing music, insence sticks to burn, but check with the client as some dont like them. You can also get pretend night light candles that flicker like real ones, look lovely without the fire risk. Hth.xx

Keep it minimal. I take my couch, and another bag with couch cover, two cot sheets and a light blanket (if the room is cool, I ask the client to supply a throw or similar) and a supply of either massage cream or oil. They supply pillows. I used to cart around a CD player and CD's - never do now - most clients have their own or are happy to tune into Classic FM if they want some background noise. Have never taken candles - too risky, and, (I hate to say this) many people detest incense!
As for putting up the couch? Can you 'rehearse' putting it up? I don't think it people will mind taking an end, but it doesn't look particularly professional - what if they have a sore back that you are there to sort out (just kidding!)

Good luck - the main thing is to enjoy yourself and help your client to relax. I've been doing 'this' for 30 years, and every day is different and it just gets better! I LOVE my job!

I am a mobile therapist and take all the stuff thats already been listed. I purchased one of those three tier draw sets that you can get from stores such as wilkos etc. I put all that i need in there and find them very handy as i end up using it as a top to place my oils etc on.

As for putting up the table, i sometimes struggle with this, mainly in a tight space, but have found most of my clients actually want to help me with this. However as jabba has said, you do need to be able to do it on your own, especially if you end up with someone heavily pregnant etc.

I remember when i first started out and i would need to write a list of all the things i had to remember to take, but it soon becomes second nature.

I don't take any candles or incence, i do take a cd player though and some cds with a good variety but often clients have their own cd but i prefer to be prepared.

I take my massage couch or reflexology chair depending on the therapy I'm performing. Then I have a case on wheels which contains towels, a pillow (one of those Sara's pillows not a normal pillow), couch cover, oil, cotton wool, rose water, a small set of speakers to connect my mp3 player to. I have a seperate small case with my essential oils in too.

I've never taken candles or incense. Some of my clients already have these things in place when I arrive out of preference - I never ask clients to get things ready like this.

In the past I've used clients stereos but not everyone has relaxation music, nor do they all know how to use their stereo systems and found that the CD would finish before my massage did (they didn't know how to use the repeat function) - so I take my own. Decided on small speakers and mp3 player as tsakes up less space in my case plus I can put all my relaxation music on it and don't get fed up with listening to the smae thing.

A lot of clients will offer to help put the couch up or help take things to your car after but others will not. I had to get a lighter couch as I struggled putting my other one up. I strugle more carrying it from my car to the house and loading/unloading my car as I have a bad back.

I have had many compliments over the years for my chocolate insence and do find it popular, so does depend on the client, also the candles I mentioned as said are not real, they are tiny led lights that look like a tea light so present no risk, just a lovely relaxed room.

Thanks guys, I think I will need to buy a new table that is lighter and easier to put up, its a shame though, as I have only had my current table about 5 months.

Faye-The heated blanket sounds nice whether mobile or not, ohhh lovely!
I guess you need to make sure you set the massage table up very near to sockets though.

I am looking forward to qualifying, but realize it will take quite some time to build up a regular client base, London has so massage therapists, even my tutor said in the last few years there seems to be a sudden craze with people wanting to enter the holistic field, having said that, hopefully the clients wanting this treatment has also grown especially with stress levels rising and rising.

Hello,

For a quick and easy way setting up your table by yourself....
unfold table so it's resting on one side, stand behind it the table (legs are sticking out on the side away from you), bend your knees to crouch down, hold the top part of the table with one hand, the lower part with the other hand, and using your legs not your back (!), tip the table forward so it stands on it's legs...nice and easy .
