Massage Online? Is This Credible?

I've been interested in getting my MTL since 2000 -- hey, life is what happens when you're busy making other plans. Anyway -- can anyone give me some feedback about online massage accreditation? My "for instance" is Ashworth University.

Under the Career Profile tab on the page that's linked in your signature:

"While our course does not train students to be massage therapists or to meet the licensing or certification regulations required in many states and cities, we do teach the same techniques used by experts."

Not sure what they ARE trying to teach then... though, I think it's pretty safe to say that if you're hoping to use this to get into the profession, then you'd be wasting your time and money. I don't know of any localities that are willing to license therapists without any in-school hands-on training.

If I had extra money, I'd look into this as a lark, out of curiosity, but that's only if it were extra extra money...

What about an online learning workshop

I've been practiacally doing this stuff for over twenty years and I have one basic massage course under my belt. In all my years of working I have never once produced my cert. Mind you things are a lot tighter now so a cert is much more important. But it is still just a paper saying how good you are, apparently?

Every massage job I have ever had was a physical demo of skills. If I could not perform a quality deep tissue massage I did not get the job. So I concentrated my education on learning this skill but not at school. The best education I've had has been testing myself and improving in extreme learning environments. Sports teams, ski field massage therapy. I am still self educating even now. I work for a Ballet company and must deal with serious injuries all day. They didn't teach me this at school.

I learn from my colleagues as well as the dancers. Roman Pallesits (Physiotherapist) Prof Dr Skrbenski (Orthopedic Surgeon) and Dr Winkler (Neurologist)

I'm working on an online learning workshop now if you would be interested? It won't cost so much. It won't come with a paper saying how good you are either, but we will be giving working examples to improve education that you can take what you need and leave what you don't.

I do not believe that any amount of online training will enable you to become a good massage therapist.

This is a touch-based service. Formal in-person training under the guidance of more experienced therapists is far superior to distance learning.

I would be inclined to agree. I think getting hands on experience, while possibly still being supervised is extremely important. If you can watch some videos, and read some information than it can certainly be a great tool to help improve techniques or learn things but it can not be as valuable as actually having someone in the room with you. I wouldn't say you should avoid learning some things from the internet, but certainly wouldnt think that is the only form of training you would want to receive.

I totally agree. However I just scored the Erik Dalton series of MAT tech's. Unfortunately I am not near any hands on education so I must make do. It's so new out of the box I have only read a small part but the man seems to have a very nice way way about approaching the body.

online training is in the near future. Most can learn the anatomy, pathology etc that way. I heard of one online class that made people learn the hands on portion with a therapist in their area in an apprenticeship format which I think is much better than massage school.

Thanks for that. I must say that the Erik Dalton course is fantastic and it has opened my eyes further to the future of bodywork. I am learning in a small group of therapists with extensive exp' and anatomy knowledge between us so that helps a lot. But I really want to meet the man in person in a classroom in the future.

I agree with you that it is possible to advance learning skills without a classroom if certain study conditions could be enhanced such as study groups. Classrooms have a place no doubt but if this is not possible...

In some states, apprenticeships are not allowed. Florida is one of those. They used to allow it but it was so abused that it was elliminated. They had a problem with spas and hotels and resorts who would hire untrained immigrants (no slur against them, this is just what happened) and would call them apprentices and pay them next to nothing and force them to work long, hard hours. They got away with it because these were "apprentices" not "employees"

It was such a problem that the state decided to do away with apprenticeships altogether.

Online Training

I don't think you will get the training you really need online. I attended a small school in N. California, it was relatively new at the time, but the learning was invaluable. It's better to learn in person with other therapists than by yourself because then, massage is just hypothetical. You need to learn hands on.

I agree that you definitely need to have the in-person feedback that you could never get online. Some of the 'book' learning (anatomy, kinesiology, ethics) would make sense to have online, but the hands-on is the MOST important part, and how do you do that online??
