I visited the Amistad last March when I was in San Jose and it was gorgeous then but the bar wasn't open. Now that it apparently is, does anyone know if girls are "working" there? Seems like the Hotel might be a bit too tourist-friendly to really embrace something like that.
Nope. Girls are not "working" there. And personally, I like the vibe that Matt has created. It's much different than SL, mainly because the girls are NOT allowed to hang around and ply their trade in the bar. It makes for a much more tranquillo atmosphere, and a nice place to sit with your chica du juor and have a cocktail before knocking boots upstairs. IMO, having the SL and Amistad so close to each other (but being much different from each other) is a win-win situation for all of us. This past weekend, I noticed a good mix of mongers, backpackers and older couples at La Amistad, and noone thought twice about it. I think Matt & Bill (SL) have BOTH come up with a winning business strategy which compliment each other's businesses.
