MacBook newbie- situation; HELP?

I just got a MacBook for Christmas- the white one... During the first part of January I started getting a note that is gray with white writing. It says that I need to hold the power button down to shut it off. I am new to Mac and not exactly sure how things work.... It happens every time that I am on it and it is EXTREMELY frustrating. Every I turn my laptop back on after having to force shut it down it says "Shutting off immediately" and I always report it but it never gets fixed... I have cleaned my cache, erased history. I'm not sure what to do- I am a MAC novice.--- HELP! Thanks so much!
Also, the macbook wasn't cheap so I would like to keep it in PRISTINE condition so I can have it until I graduate high school! Let me know how I can keep it running fast, keep it clean, and just overall take nice care of it. Thanks,
