Little help for an Excel newbie?

[Hypothetical Situation]

Okay, I'm pretty good with computers, but never had much to do with Excel, so I'm wondering how I would go about doing this, if it's possible.

Right, I basically need a way to list a whole load of items, corresponding with their location. Say Item 3800F is in Box J. And there's hundreds of similar entries. I know how to type all of that in, obviously.

But say I needed to search Item 3800F to immediately find that it's in Box J.

How do I do that? Can I do that, more to the point?

I'm not sure if this is what you want to accomplish but try to press Ctrl+F, put in 3800F and hit Enter. It should lead you to where 3800F is located.

Control and F will bring up the find function. type 3800F into that and it will find all entries that match.

Or maybe it would be easier for you to use the autofilter? try clicking data-filter-auto filter
