is wearing wedding ring when giving a massage ok?

Hi all,

We were taught to remove all jewellery when performing massage. Does this include wedding ring also? I have been removing mine, but am afraid i'll end up losing it!

On both the ITEC Holistic Massage and VTCT Sports Massage courses we were told that wearing a wedding ring is OK. I guess it's really down to whether it gets in the way when you are massaging - I always prefer to remove mine.

My fingers have changed shape so much over the last 30 years, that I have resorted to wearing my wedding ring on a chain round my neck. I never wore it when doing therapy.

When I did my training I was told that it is ok to leave a wedding ring on, however, I always remove mine because it catches quite easily and I always think it is better safe than sorry.

Yes, ITEC states that wedding rings and stud earrings are the only jewellery permitted when giving a massage.

I personally have never ever taken mine off (believe it is bad luck!) and would not have done the course had I had to remove it. It is a smooth band and I have never had any scratches or comments from clients.

Mine used to catch, so I soon stopped wearing it for treatments and leave it off in a safe place at home, on the days that I have treatments, rather than just removing it for each treatment and putting it on the side somewhere. I used to do this, and on a couple of occasions thought I'd lost it.

I have a signet ring that I've worn for *** years since my 18th birthday and I doubt I could get if off my finger now anyway. It's never been an issue - it's similar to a wedding band, low profile. Try this as a test - make a fist with your right hand, cup your left hand over the back of your right and slide your left fingers/palm around/across the back of your right hand while applying a typical massage pressure - if you don't feel the ring sliding across the back of your right hand, then it's unlikely a client would notice either.

I just took off all my rings and left them at home during my course - found it much easier as was also paranoid that I would forget!

Hi we were told to move all rings apart from your wedding band. I always take mine off and put it in a little box in the bedroom. Although it is a smooth band, it does tend to move about and I think that it could possibly catch. It does feel wierd not to wear it but like Aromababe I take it off on the day of my treatments and then put them on as soon as I take my uniform off. I suppose not wearing them has become part of my "uniform" so to speak.

I had a friend in school who wore her wedding ring while giving massages, and I never felt it once! I also worked with a lady who would take off her wedding ring as soon as she entered the room to begin the massage, then put it back on right after the massage was finished. She would put it in a visible spot so she always knew where it was.
