harry , i will give you a tip....stay in san jose ..get away from the DR and see some other places ...jaco will cost you at least 50 each way (if you look hard for a cheap taxi) you will need to check out ,then check back in to your hotel (in san jose) for what ? To see 50 or 60 girls ...45 of them you wont give a shit about , the only place that has action is the beattle bar and they dont start kicking until 9:30 ...there are plenty of mp's and bars in the san jose area to show you a good time ....pm me if you need anymore info ..chilimike

Jaco is very hot, sticky and has a mild yet foul stench which hangs over the town. I suppose the way one views Jaco depends a great deal upon ones stage in life. For me, there are too many young, unkempt Gringos who hang around pretending to be surfer-beach-bum-locals but in reality they are little more than mooching, thieving, drug users looking for an opportunity to exploit.

In Jaco, the prices are too high, the degree of difficultly to get there – unless you have a car or someone who will drive you - is too great and the benefits do not equal the costs. Stay in San Jose.

One of my friends who is visiting from the U.S., just returned from Jaco. He explained that never again is too soon. On the other hand, if you enjoy heat, humidity, high prices and a bad smell, it may just be the place.

You know I always say I will never return to jaco everytime I go to CR, but find myself there for a day or two. The problem I have is when I go to CR I really want to hit up the beaches for some without the loss of access to chicas. Although, Jaco doesn't have the best beaches, it is what it is. As for places to go. Here is what I have experienced.

1. First go to Beatle Bar: Most girls want Cien and it isn't easy to get them much off that.

2. After BB closes go to the Monkey bar: Don't stay too long, but occasionally you can find a diamond in the rough. Last time there a buddy and I picked up some Cali girls. No charge obviously.

3. Then Nacho Daddy's: All the chicas end up here and you can usually do much better with prices. It's more of a night club.

4. Lastly, I would say I never hear anyone mention this place, but everytime I'm there I have my best luck, go to Pancho Villas. It's open 24 hours and all the girls left go there for some food. You can generally get a real deal here. Last time here I went home with two chicas for $80 and they were pretty good looking. They know they are going home and might as well make a few bucks on the way.

I hope this helps. I know everyone really seems to hate Jaco, but I don't mind it much. If you like sushi try Tsunami. It is incredible. I think it may be the real reason I keep going back.

P.S. One quick note. Bring cash. There is generally a big storm every night for a half hour and half the time it knocks out the phone lines. I couldn't use an ATM for 36 hours once.

It seems that you are much more likely to encounter theft in Jaco than in San Jose. And possibly chicas trying to rob or drug is more likely in Jaco.

Remembering

Good posts on Jaco in the new millenium. Now imagine what is was like when there wasn't any mongering joints, or rather any girls in the joints to monger.

If you are going to be in San Jose for 10 days or more, highly recommend getting out of the concrete jungle for a little bit of Costa Rica and go to Jaco.

I went in Dec with a couple gals from the gulch that had a car, $40 bucks to the gas tank is much less that taxi fare, plus you can stop and grab eats and drinks wherever you feel like. The hotel had great pool and food, the beatle bar etc was close by and full of chicas (didnt ask about the price since I had company). The ride was roughly 3 hours each way showing a bit of the country side & small towns you pass thru.

Jaco full of phony surfers and a high percentage of dirtbags, but the water was nice to swim in, though the beach was nothing spectacular, still better than the beach in the gulch. Some nice views. Stay for a day or two, stay alert and enjoy being out of the gulch for a time.

Jaco is definately worth visiting during your mongering tour. The ideal trip to Costa Rica would include running the gammet on the great scene in San Jose, and then checking out the Jaco scene. You should know that for every one person that rants about how they don't like Jaco, and how terrible it is, there are 1000's of people that have a great time here and return year after year.

It may not be for everyone, but it sure pleases the majority as it's the most visited destination in Costa Rica! Let me know if you need any Jaco trip planning pointers. How bout the weather generally in mid-late May Hooked? Any more rainy there than its going to be in SJ? Is there mostly sunny beach days or mostly not? I thought of checking into Claritas out there for a week in May. Can I pack some shorts, sandals, hawaiian shirts, a visor and leave everything else behind? An hour or two lying in the sun is all I could handle anyway. But wandering like a beach bum around the beach bar sounds fun...especially with ladies hovering like vultures. What say you?

We hooked with some Joseafinas at the BB who came down to $50 very quickly. 4 of them together all $50 each.
We snapped them up and had a blast.
They were what I called semi pros. They have real jobs in San Jose, but make the ocassional trip to Jaco to party and get paid to get laid.
They were very cute and very fun.
All in their mid 20's.
2 of them bartenders in SanJose. Not HDR bartenders. I wish. But bartenders from a High end hotel in SJO.
They weren't clock watchers.
They were so much fun we hung out with them the next afternoon and night. The second night all my Tica wanted was cab fare back to her Cabina. I still gave her another $50.

Be careful of girls on the sidewalk! und***ge (jail bait) drug addicts look to score some cash for drugs. One of my wingmen got pickpocketed there by a little cuttie last year.

Crime in Jaco is getting worse. Big time crack and meth problems. They have brought in more police but it doesn't seem to help. Our hotel had 2 guards this year. Because 1 couldn't handle keeping the property secure.

Don't walk at night. Take a cab. No matter how ridiculously short the ride is.

I have a friend who just got back from over a week in CR split between SJO and Jaco and he said he felt like the girls were a lot better looking in Jaco than the HDR, never paid more than $80, and some of them stayed most of the night.
