he has the intention of marrying her? My boyfriend is from afghanistan and i only met his parents after 11 months of dating and they both really like me.
A girl i know who works with his mother told me that she had said to her "have you met his gf yet" and his mother replied with "no we dont meet her unless they are going to get married"

was she joking or is this a tradition?

I am a non Muslim and his mother said this to the girl that I know about 8 months into our relationship (before i met them)
Both of his parents are aware of my culture (italian/english) and they approve of our relationship

That is incomplete information. Islam does not allow dating in the first place.
 
It deponds on his nationality. I'm from Iran and I'm Muslim but our tradition is diffrent.
In Iran the boy and girl stay in contact for less than 1 year then the marry.
