So I have had my guinea pig Tinkerbell for about 3 weeks. She was caged with other guinea pigs when I got her so I know she's very social. She's a little skiddish, but i'm not sure if thats because she's still getting use to me, or because thats her personality. Well, I decided to get another piggy so she could have some company. But I didn't do research on how to make them meet, so I just put my new piggie Buttercup in with Tinkerbell. There was no fighting so I assumed it was ok, they made some sounds. Tinkerbell did more of a high pitch squeel, like she does when I hold her, and Buttercup did the same, but it was a little bit deeper. I'm not an expert on this but at this point I assumed these were good sounds because there was no fighting, they just sniffed each other out. I also did not put them into a neutral area. I just but Buttercup into Tinkerbells cage. And then Buttercup started mounting Tinkerbell, I found this odd becuase Buttercup was in Tinkerbells territory? After about 10 minutes of this I seperated them. Tinkerbell squirmed around while Buttercup was mounting her, but she would follow her around as if thy were friends. I am very new to guinea pigs so I just want the best for both of them. I want to know how to do an introduction PROPERLY, since I failed the first time.
This is my plan, please let me know if this is good, or what I should do differently:
Create a neutral area with neither of their scents
Have plenty of foods to keep them distracted from each other
Have a towel ready in case they start to fight
Also, when I introduce them next, what signs can I look for to see if they can get along or if they are just a bad match. Because if they are just a bad match I can take back Buttercup and try again with another piggy. Thank you for any advice
Thank you guys very much. I'll let them meet a couple times before I leave them unsupervised.
There was no blood drawn, but Tinkerbell did not like the mounting AT ALL, so i just seperated them asap so a fight didn't break out.
