I have 10 hens and one (very large) rooster. They are all about 4 and their laying has slowed way down. So rather than wait until they all die off to get more like has happened in the past... I decided to buy 6 chicks to get us up to our original number and replace them as they die off so they are all different ages so we have a constant supply of eggs. My baby chicks hatched May 4 so tomorrow they will be 2 weeks old. Of course they will be inside for a while but im wondering how the old chickens will react to my babies when its time to introduce them. They are fenced in about an acre with my 2 goats and the coop is quite large. Ive never done it like this before, all my other flocks were born and raised together. Whats the best way to go about this?
Also.... all the chicks are supposedly hens but im almost sure I have one rooster of the 6, my dad thinks 3. Ive had roosters living together before and everything was fine, but they were raised together. I actually had 3 at one time because I ended up with 2 boys when i hatched some myself and the dad was extremely mild tempered. My rooster now is very large like I said and weve had no incidents with him but he does try to peck sometimes when we reach our arms to close the coop at night. So hypothetically, if we do happen to get another rooster (if its 3 we will find new homes) but if its one we will try to keep them together...
note: the chicks were bought from a hatchery by the feed store we bought them from, and they were sexed.
