introducing a ferret to a dog?

well i have a pointer/hunting dog a britney spaniel and he will chase squirrels rabbits and birds and stray cats [the only cat he is fine with is our pet cat which he grew up with since he was a puppy] and my parents are worried that if i get ferrets then my dog would attack the cage tip it over and the ferrets would die and my door would have to be open were hate dog could get too so how can i introduce a hunting dog to ferrets thanks

I'm not sure that you'll be able to convince your pointer to accept the ferrets to be honest. I have three ferrets and a shichi dog, but I got the dog second, and he was raised with ferrets already in the house. If you can have someone restrain the dog, have it lying on its side and place the ferrets on top, you may be able to convince the dog that the ferrets are dominant, but chances are it won't make the ferrets safe with the dog. The best bet would be to keep the ferret separate from the dog and invest in a good quality cage. For caging I suggest the Ferret Nation line, even a larger dog would have difficulties knocking the cage over and the bars do not bend easily. But, since your dog is of a breed meant to hunt/kill small animals, it would be very difficult to train that out of it, especially when it came first. Remember, even a dog raised with ferrets is never 100% safe with them.
