Narendra Mehta probably can be attributed with bringing it to the west.  He and his wife teach it all over the place, in the US, they do classes with IDI http://www.dermalinstitute.com

It's a REALLY firm massage - I've had treatments with Kundan Mehta, Narendra's wife, and wow, it is firm.  I've done the training and know I get nowhere near how firm the 2 of them are - the forearm strength is incredible. As they teach it, it's a sitting massage, some with the therapist standing behind the head.  It's invigorating, yet still quite relaxing.

Kundan also teaches Indian Facial Rejuvenation which is done with the client on a table.  It's also very similar to Melanie Sach's Marmamassage, which I think is now called Ayurvedic Face Rejuvenation. Details can be found in the book Ayurvedic Beauty Care by Melanie Sachs It's a much lighter, incredibly relaxing treatment.

If you're after a treatment with the client lying down, I'd recommend Melanie Sachs' courses.

I don't find much interest in it, but I am in Australia, and we are a bit behind on what is "fashionable" in spa treatments - hot stone massage is only just now taking off here!

My intrest in this spawned while doing research on shirodhara. I am an eastern modality kinda gal. Plus I love working on peoples heads. This is kinda the lowdown:Indian head massage is based on the ancient healing system called Ayurveda. The massage is invigorating, revitalizing and an uplifting treatment working on the upper back, shoulders, scalp and face. These areas are massaged with a firm and gentle rhythmic fashion involving Marma points (acupressure points). Traditionally Ayurvedic oils are massaged into the scalp for their many therapeutic properties. The use of oils is optional.This particular form of massage can be used to relieve eyestrain, insomnia, migraines, stiff necks and shoulders and headaches. It also relaxes and tones the facial muscles and stimulates and nourishes the hair and scalp.Thanks for the info melb!

If you're interested in in as a precursor for shiro dhara, then then Melanie's Sachs' course is perfect.  I did it as a 4 day course and it included shiro dhara.  I have to admit, I've not bothered with the shiro dhara at all - probably because I didn't like it (it doesn't suit high pitta, and in a learning enviroment I go HIGH pitta), I have very thick hair and getting the oil out was a nightmare and I'm fairly oil-phobic (I'm sounding like an extreme pitta here )  I'm just not comfortable with inflicting gallons of oil on a client, so I've not invested in the eqipment.  I do use the facial rejevenation routine often.

Indian Head Massage is a wonderful treatment to offer.However, there isn't any strict "this is what IHM is" guidelines. As melb said Narendra Mehta helped bring it to the west, and has gone a long way in introducing Champissage and a standard to work to. Here in the UK there are litteraly hundreds of courses and classes in IHM, each slightly different.That is one of the things I love about it, and part of the tradition of Head Massage in India. It is something that was passed down mother to daughter and as such no two treatments are the same.Sometimes you can use oils for the massage, quite often you would do it without any medium. Both are equally delicious to receive.Mat xx

Another take on the history - Indian men would traditionally go to a barber for head massage, and the Indian name was champissage, which is where we get the word shampoo (traditionally it was done dry, but think of the motions of shampooing and you get an idea of some of the moves).  I did a day workshop, and it was one of the nicest modalities, done seated in a chair.  Don't do it AFTER you've just had your hair done though ;-)

I have a few Indian head massage videos..they are interesting and they look divine..I have not offered it "solely" as a modality yet tho..not sure how that would go etc...but it looks like it feels divine and I can definatly see the benefits of it!
