Ideas for extra room..products/business/services?

The office I am set up in (I graduate in Dec., just finishing my outreach hours) has a fairly large extra room. Any ideas on what else would be a good idea for extra services, products or businesses that would complement our existing massage practice?

Please describe your business a little and that will help us think of some ideas that would go well with it. What type of work are you focused on? Where are you located in relation to other businesses, homes, etc?

Type of business

Just a small practice with one owner. I will be renting/paying a % of my earnings to her. Two other therapists work 1-2 x per month. I have my own room, the owner/operator shares her room with the other two. All relaxation Massage Therapy. I will probably continue my education with Reflexology and Deep Tissue. I will probably offer some scrubs and facial massage in my room. Very small town so nothing too off the wall would fly. Just thought someone may have an idea of some type of business that would complement our current. The O/O is fairly conservative as well.

Ideas for extra room products/business/service

Hi, I would definetely add retail. Make it be things you use during massage so they can experience it and then purchase it if they want, such as essential oils, biofreeze, tiger balm, fomentec bags, candles, eye or neck pillows,etc.

Have you thought of holding a support group for people who suffer from Fibromyagia? You could meet once a month, and let the focus be on sharing information and being pro-active,etc. You could also hold Mom & baby massage & movement class. I'm not sure what your target market is, but I hope I'm giving you a flavor of what can be offered.

Yes, I agree retail could be a good option. Exercise balls, Theracanes, and the other suggestions above are great.

I also like the idea of using the room to promote your practice. You could create several different support groups and regular classes that happen in that free space that would help develop better relationships and more clients. The Massage classes for the public is an excellent suggestions and are very popular and easy to teach.

You could also partner with different businesses that would be willing to give free classes to your clients (a different one every month). Like a nutritionist, financial advisor, yoga teacher, etc. That way you would be providing a free resource to your clients that will increase your value in their eyes. And you will be offering them a variety of well-being focused events. Often these events can bring you lots of new business because your clients will bring friends and family. And the person teaching the classes can also invite their clients.

Or if you really want to rent it out, then maybe you could consider a nutritionist, physical therapists, or acupuncturists. The ideal person to bring in would be someone who is non-competitive, but has a similar client base so that you can cross refer to each other.

Make it a sitting area for clients to have a "spot of tea" or other drink and time to regroup before heading home.
Have one beautiful (as beautiful as you can afford) comfie COMFIE chair perhaps with an ottoman. A side table with hot water carafe or tea pot etc....
I would also have a glass cabinet with some retail....salts, scrubs, oils omniballs etc. While they are sitting, they will be looking and wondering.
Instruct them to take a few minutes to regroup.

Am I making sense?

i like the idea of having classes in that room. having a couples massage class has always been something that i've wanted to do with my extra treatment room. of course, i've done nothing with it and it's been over a year now. just wasted space....boo. i thought of the sitting room also. the thing i've found with that is most people will not take you up on it. once they get dressed, they usually leave. i guess it depends on your setup. if there is a lot of space and other people around, they might use it. if it's usually just you around, people will feel like they should leave. not always, but usually. (from my experience anyway-they always joke like "wake me up in the morning" or something along those lines but most people will feel "funny" just hanging around.) i've recently thought about teaching some other small classes like a breathing class or a relaxation class. something to teach people to slow down and appreciate their surroundings kind of thing.

This is actually what the owner just suggested, so I guess we'll be going with that. May do some retail too. I love those inhalers from earth solutions so I'll probably stock some of those.

Just a thought on retail, music that you play during your massage could be something people will purchase. I do like the class idea and the comphy sitting area as well.

just wanted to add a quick note on retail. from my experience and some others that i know, retail doesn't move in a massage office. i don't know why but it just doesn't. i thought it would be a great idea. you know, not too much but just some products that i really like. well, it's been over a year and i have hundreds of dollars just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. if you do decide to have some retail, i would suggest biofreeze, some cold packs, some music cds as lecontefairy mentioned above and that's about it. now of course, this was just my experience but i've talked about it with others...it just doesn't seem to sell. (i'm in the process of just giving what i have away-totally sucks but what the heck else am i going to do with it? maybe i should get busy on ebay!)

what sells

I have found that retail doesnt sell very good. But.... when something does sell, it is something i have used in the session. Rice packs that my daughter made sell best. They are inexpencive to make, some flannel material and rice. But you have to sell them cheap cheap cheap. It is okay tho, because they are cheap to make.

In the last 15 months I have been in business, I have sold 2 CD's, 10 tongue scrapers, and about 10 rice packs of various sizes.

When I move into my new office space in January I am going to use big rice packs for clients backs and feet that I warm up in the microwave. I have not decided if I will sell anything in my new office, its not worth the hassle.

When I did sell them, I sold small ones for eyes for $4 and large squares or rectangles for $6. If I sold the big ones for backs they would be $10, they are BIG.
